Abuela Mami (“Grandmother Mom”) is a new Miami-based subscription box that sends you a monthly delivery of Cuban coffee, treats, and other surprises.
Each box will feature 4 to 9 hand-picked items relating to Cuban culture. You can expect to receive items such as snacks, coffee, kitchen tools, mugs, candies, meats, games, dried fruits, and more. Abuela Mami also offers a “coffee only” box for lovers of Cafe Bustelo and other Cuban brands.
Subscriptions are $24.95/month, US shipping included.
Let’s see what’s in the December 2015 Abuela Mami box!
The box!
There wasn’t an info card included, but this insert gave a bit of a hint as to what I’d find inside.
All of the items were packed snugly into a Abuela Mami drawstring bag.
Espresso Maker/Moka Pot – I wasn’t 100% sure what this was until I Googled a bit. I knew it had something to do with brewing coffee, but that was it. Turns out it’s an old school aluminum espresso maker! You can use it right on your stove top and it’s portable so it’s great for camping too. I haven’t tried it out yet, but it looks like you fill the bottom portion with water & coffee and as it heats up the steam pushes the coffee through the filter to the top? Obviously I’ll need to look into this a bit more. 😉
Cafe La Carreta Espresso Coffee Brick – La Carreta, a Miami-based restaurant, has been serving this coffee for over 40 years. It contains a blend of specially selected beans that are precisely roasted using a secret family recipe. The package includes instructions for making an authentic Cuban style espresso which utilizes the moka pot above (and lots of sugar!).
Cuba Espresso Cup & Saucer Set – I didn’t own an espresso cup (mug?) before opening this box, so I’m glad they included it! The plate/saucer is solid white and the cup features a map of Cuba in red, white, & blue.
Conchita Maria Dorada Cookies – These look like the perfect, light cookie to enjoy with a cup of coffee. They were SO close to being vegan (damn you, whey powder!), but I’ll have to pass them along to my kiddos to enjoy.
Arcor Strawberry Filled Hard Candies – I used to LOVE these candies when I was little. I always assumed that they weren’t vegan, but I just looked up the ingredients and I think they might be safe. Woo!
I had no idea what to expect when I received my Abuela Mami box, but I really enjoyed it! I love that they included everything you need to make your own authentic Cuban espresso — the moka pot, coffee, and even a cup & saucer set… Plus snacks too! Definitely a great box for anyone who enjoys traditional Cuban food, snacks, coffee, and culture.
