Every Artisan Box purchased helps support local Indian craftsmen, artisans, and small businesses.
Subscriptions are $49/month with free worldwide shipping (if you sign up by September).
Let’s see what’s in the August 2015 Artisan Box!
Oooh! International mail parcel!
The box itself was custom printed and very sturdy (reusable!).
A peek inside. Nice presentation!
The tri-fold information card listed everything I’d find in the box, as well as photos, descriptions, and prices for each item. This month’s featured region was Gujrat, India.
To avoid posting 3 giant photos of the info card, I just smushed all of the descriptions into one collage. Hard to read this way, but you get the idea.
Suf Embroidered Woolen Stole ($25) – This bold scarf/stole is hand-embroidered using a technique that features symmetrical patterns with tiny triangles and accent stitches. I like the color scheme, as well as the design, but my favorite part is definitely the tassels. I’m a sucker for tassels. 😉
Multipurpose Bag made from Recycled Plastic ($8) – Recyling waste material into handcrafted goods is a great way for Indian artisans to generate income for their families. This colorful bag/purse is made using waste plastic. The materials are collected, washed, and grouped by color and quality. Then it’s cut into strips and woven into durable textiles using an ancient loom technique. The end result is this nifty little bag!
Rudraksha ($10) – Rudraksha is a seed (from a type of large evergreen tree) that’s traditionally used to make prayer beads. It’s believed that the seeds act as a shield against negative energies. This necklace can be worn around your neck or wrapped around your wrist to bring calm and serenity to your life.
Ancient Rogan Art ($30) – Rogan is a residue that’s formed when castor oil is heated over fire and cast into cold water. When mixed with natural coloring, Rogan makes a unique painting medium. Artisans use a wooden stick or pen to dip into the Rogan to create intricate, symmetrical patterns onto fabric. I was surprised to get an actual painting in the box… Pretty neat!
Handcrafted Lacquered Wood Honey Dipper ($10) – This is a hand-carved wooden honey dipper that features a lacquered handle with a bright colored design. The lacquer is colored with vegetable dyes and makes for a really unique piece.
Herbal Facial Soap ($1) – This small herbal soap sample is made with coconut oil, organic saffron, almond oil, and soap base. It’s made by freedom fighters in Gujarat and is said to help in removing dark spots and acne.
I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from the first Artisan Box, but I was really impressed. It had a nice variety of items and I liked the inclusion of both traditional and modern pieces. The value was good as well, with $84 in products!
If you’d like to sign up for Artisan Box, you can save 10% with coupon code LWAB10 — but hurry, offer is only good through 8/15!
