Each title is chosen by their diverse team who carefully selects books with cultural relevancy and accuracy. Their goal is to teach your child about different cultures in our growingly interconnected world.

Let’s see what’s in the September 2016 Culture Chest box!
Everything was shipped in a flat box with a Culture Chest sticker in the center.
A peek inside.
The theme for September’s box was Dancing/Music in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Tito Puente Mambo King by Monica Brown ($12.08, Amazon) – This brightly illustrated children’s book is based on the life of “Mambo King”, Tito Puente. It follows his life from when he was just a boy, banging on things with forks and spoons, to the Grammy-winning artist that he came to be. Text is included in both English and Spanish.
My Name is Celia: The Life of Celia Cruz by Monica Brown ($12.97, Amazon) – If the illustration style on the pages above look familiar, it’s because this book was also written and drawn by the same pair who wrote/illustrated the first book. As with Tito Puente, this story also includes both English and Spanish text. It’s the story of Celia Cruz, a Cuban-born singer who overcomes many obstacles to fulfill her dream of becoming a world-renowned salsa queen.
Activity – The “activity” for September was to make a shoe box guitar. I was honestly a little disappointed to see that none of the actual materials for the project were included — only the instructions.
While I think the mission of Culture Chest is great, I feel like they really need to improve on the activity portion. The selected books were perfect for September’s theme and were valued (on Amazon) at almost the total cost of the subscription. To make the subscription seem more worthwhile, a fun hands-on (materials included!) craft/activity would definitely add to the overall value. — Remember, for a limited time you can save 15% on your first box with coupon code “ROSEBUD“!
