Flaviar is a subscription box that sends you a monthly sampling of fine spirits from around the globe.
The older version of their “Tasting Box” (the one I’ll be reviewing) contained five premium spirits selected by Flaviar’s experts and industry professionals. However, they’ve recently introduced a private Speakeasy Club which will include a quarterly themed tasting box of 3 x 1.5oz samples, free shipping on anything, two membership invites, exclusive access to tasting events, and more. Featured liquors can include whiskey, rum, gin, vodka, tequila, and more. Subscribers can choose to skip a month or cancel at anytime.
Subscriptions are now $60 per quarter.
Let’s see what’s in the February 2016 Flaviar Rum Tasting Box!
The box was shipped all the way from Slovenia and was sealed with staples to ensure none of the precious cargo was lost.
Box in a box!
“Here be pirates, yo-ho!”… A not so subtle hint at what type of spirits were inside.
The rum-age!
Detailed tasting instructions were included, as well as a brief history on the origins of rum.
Since I rarely drink alcohol and don’t wanna pretend that I know what I’m talking about, I’m just going to paraphrase the descriptions and tasting notes from the info sheet like I did last time. 😉
Kraken Black Spiced Rum – This particular rum comes from the Virgin Islands, where it’s aged in oak barrels for 12 to 24 months before being blended with spices including cinnamon and ginger. It features an aroma of chocolate and cinnamon, with flavors of sweet molasses, chocolate, and vanilla.
Pyrat XO Reserve Rum – A blended dark rum hailing from Guyana, this features a strong (non-complex) orange flavor making it ideal for rum newbies. The sweet citrus notes are accompanied by vanilla and brown sugar, leaving you with a sweet and lasting finish.
Dos Maderas PX 5YO + 5 YO – A triple aged rum that first spends 5 years in the Carribean in American oak casks, then 3 years in the Spanish facilities of Bodegas Williams & Humbert in their sherry casks, then another 2 years in casks used for the 20 year old “Don Guido” Pedro Ximénez Sherry. The flavor is smooth, fruity, and a bit spicy with hints of caramel, chocolate, tobacco, leather (ew), and honey.
Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 – A Guatemalan rum made with virgin sugar cane honey and fermented with a yeast extracted from pineapples. It features an aroma of caramel, vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon, toffee coated bananas, and orange peel. The flavor is very sweet n’ fruity with hints of cinnamon and ginger.
Ron de Jeremy – I really expected this vial to be larger. 😉 Fun fact: “Ron” is the Spanish word for rum. Ron de Jeremy is a 7 year old dark Panamanian Rum that features a tropical scent with a sweet, syrupy bourbon vanilla and caramel flavor.
The notes for this particular rum were quite interesting. 😉
Flaviar continues to be an ideal subscription box for anyone looking to experience a variety of different brands and flavors of spirits from the comfort of their home. The bottles are presented beautifully and I find the guides/notes to be very helpful. I also appreciate the little doses of wit and pervertedness sprinkled throughout. 😉
