I haven’t had a chance to check out a GlobeIn box in a while, so I was excited when they offered to send July’s box for review.
If you’re not aware, GlobeIn is a monthly subscription box that features handcrafted goods by artisans around the world. Each month features a new theme with products supplied by various artisans.
GlobeIn helps to bring income and exposure to small artists, while introducing you to beautiful pieces of their culture. Many of the products included are eco-friendly, fairly traded, and/or organic. Subscriptions are $35/month (shipping included), or less with multi-month commitments.
Let’s see what’s inside the July 2015 GlobeIn box!
As always, all of the products were tucked inside of a handwoven basket, which was shipped in a square brown box. The quote featured on the outside was fitting, as this month’s theme is “Wander”.
A peek inside the basket.
Palm Leaf Basket Mexico ($12) – One of these pretty baskets are included in each month’s box. They’re made of discarded palm leaves and can take up to 6 hours to hand-weave.
Apihappi Handloomed Drawstring Backpack Sri Lanka ($29.99) – I don’t normally like these fabric drawstring type backpacks, but I gotta say… This one is kinda cute. I like this green color so much better than the blue shade shown in the spoiler pics. There’s even a little zipped pouch attached to the inside, which I love. I’m all about zippered compartments. Oh right — and this is handloomed by local artisans in Sri Lanka… Every purchase helps to support local school children in the area, as well as the community as a whole. Plus, the bag can hold up to an impressive 44 pounds!
Elephant Travel Journal from Mr. Ellie Pooh Sri Lanka ($14.99) – Do you like writing crappy poetry? — Then this is the journal for you! haha (Bad) jokes aside, this notebook/travel journal is indeed made from elephant poop. Seriously. It even says so on the bottom of each page. But don’t worry, they totally sanitize and process it (I sniffed it to be sure). The elephant’s vegan (woo!) diet results in cellulose-heavy poo, making it easy to turn into paper. This helps the elephants to be seen as a sustainable economic resource by local farmers, as opposed to a threat to area crops.
Lulu Life Virgin Sudanese Shea Butter South Sudan ($7.95) – An all-natural moisturizer-slash-mosquito repellant! This is made with just 3 ingredients: Sudanese shea butter, beeswax, and PMD (a natural extract from lemon eucalyptus oil). It smells great and I’m looking forward to seeing how it works against the swarms of mosquitos that like to hang out at my parent’s house.
Kuli Kuli Crunchy Almond Moringa Superfood Bar Ghana (~$1.50) – According to the info card, moringa has “twice the protein of greek yogurt, 4 times the calcium of milk and 7 times the vitamin C of orange juice”. Impressive! Moringa trees thrive in harsh environments, making it an ideal crop for families in Ghana to benefit from both economically and nutritionally.
