November GlobeIn time! This month I was sent both their standard Artisan Box, as well as their newest offering — the Benefit Basket (which is what I’ll be reviewing below).
If you’re not aware, GlobeIn is a monthly subscription box that features handcrafted goods by artisans around the world. Each month features a new theme with products supplied by various artisans.
GlobeIn helps to bring income and exposure to small artists, while introducing you to beautiful pieces of their culture. Many of the products included are eco-friendly, fairly traded, and/or organic. Subscriptions are $35/month (shipping included), or less with multi-month commitments. In addition to their standard Artisan Box, they also offer a smaller Benefit Basket for just $19.95/month. Every Benefit Basket includes one artisan-made item, along with a handwoven palm leaf basket.
Let’s see what’s inside the November 2015 GlobeIn Benefit Basket!
As with the regular GlobeIn boxes, the Benefit Basket also featured a sticker with wording related to the month’s theme. In this case, it was hinting at the main item (which I’ll most definitely be giving a name!).
The theme for November’s box was “Bedroom” and included an adorable pillow pet made in Guatemala. The info card explained more about the company behind it, their mission, and the methods used to produce each pillow.
Y’abal Handicrafts Seahorse Pillow Pet Guatemala ($22) – I love this lil’ guy! He was made by Guatemalan artisans using traditional back-strap weaving methods which are passed down from mother to daughter. A variety of different textiles are used in a range of colors. One side features an orange color scheme, while the other is more gold/yellow. GlobeIn suggests propping the pillow pet on your bed to give it a dose of whimsey. 🙂 Cuuute!
GlobeIn also included a note about one of the women who helped to design the pillow pets. Her sister was recently diagnosed with cancer and their entire family have assisted in cutting, sewing, stuffing, and assembling the pillows whose proceeds will help pay for her sister’s healthcare.
Palm Leaf Basket Mexico ($12) – This month GlobeIn debuted a new basket design! Their old baskets were circular and included a lid, while this new one is a bit larger, square in shape, and lidless. It was designed by indigenous artisan Don Juan Garcia Lopez, who lives in the rural canyonlands of the Mexican state of Oaxaca. Like the previous version, these baskets are still made with woven palm leaves.
I’m quite pleased with November’s GlobeIn Benefit Basket. The pillow pet is adorable and the mission behind him makes me love him even more. I also like the new basket design. The lids were sometimes tricky to get on, so I’m happy with the change.
