Handpick is a new meal service that delivers fresh groceries and recipes to your door every week.
Compared to most meal subscription services, not only is Handpick more affordable, but they also send you full-sized grocery items. Plus you have total control over how often you receive a box (“bundle”). You simply place an order when you’d like one delivered. No subscription to pause or cancel.
Handpick offers 5 different bundle options to choose from: Asian, Meat Lover, Vegetarian, Gluten-Free, and Seafood. Each bundle will contain 12-15 ingredients along with 3 step-by-step recipes. Prices average around $40/bundle.
Currently, you can only place an order from their App and bundles are only being delivered to California. Plans are in the works to expand to other platforms and locations soon.
Let’s see what’s in my Handpick Smart Groceries Vegetarian Bundle!
Everything was securely packed in a big box with plenty of ice packs to keep it cool.
As the card notes, my vegetarian bundle contained 15 ingredients, along with 3 recipes.
First up was a Veggie Quinoa Bowl. It included 3 large heads of broccoli, a block of tofu, a bag of baby spinach, organic quinoa, dried shitake mushrooms, garlic, and an onion.
The recipe card listed all of the ingredients along with simple step-by-step instructions and photos.
Next up was Asian-inspired Garlic Tofu with Rice. It included a second block of tofu, garlic (from the previous recipe), a bag of long grain rice, green onions, dried shitake mushrooms (from the previous recipe), a full jar of hoisin sauce, a lemon, and soy sauce.
Again, all of the ingredients and instructions are included on the recipe card.
Finally, we have an Anytime Egg Casserole for Breakfast Lovers. This included a package of French sandwich rolls, 6 eggs, green onions (from previous recipe), another bag of baby spinach, an Italian cheese blend, and broccoli (from previous recipe).
As a vegan, the egg casserole was the only recipe I wasn’t able to work with. I ended up passing along the eggs to my parents and the cheese to my husband. 😉
I couldn’t decide whether to make the Asian tofu or the quinoa bowl, so I actually made my own version of both combined. — An “Asian-inspired Garlic Tofu Veggie Quinoa Bowl”. 🙂
First, I marinated the tofu in a mixture of hoisin sauce, chopped garlic, and soy sauce. It then went into the fridge for 30 minutes while I prepared the quinoa and chopped veggies.
I’ve never chopped green onions in my life, so this was new… I had no idea they’d burn my eyes like “regular” onions. Ouch.
Next, I chopped up a ton of broccoli. There was a LOT included — more than enough for the featured recipes.
I fried the tofu for 10 minutes or so, then added the broccoli that I steamed beforehand for about 5 minutes. The green onions went in last.
The finished dish! I’m clearly not a food photographer, but I promise this tasted a lot better than it looks.
Overall, I was very impressed with Handpick. The produce was super fresh, the portions were large, and the recipes were easy to follow. Obviously, it would have made more sense for me if they had a vegan option, but I know they’re working on making things more customizable in the future.
