Kawaii Surprises is an online store that features candies, trinkets, and other fun goodies sent right to you from Japan. In addition to selling individual items, they also offer a variety of “surprise packages” with quite a few different themes. Bento, Pocky, Hello Kitty — if it’s cute, there’s probably a surprise box for it!
I’ve always loved overly cutesy Japanese novelty items, so I was thrilled when Kawaii Surprises offered to send me a mystery package for review. They sent their popular “Kawaii Surprise Package” that includes a variety of Japanese candy & goods.
The package took about a month to arrive and when I saw the envelope on my porch the other day, I could not WAIT to open it up! (Warning: Repeated use of the word “cute” ahead! Yep, even more than usual!)
Everything was packed into a big brown envelope. (International mail is always extra fun to get!)
Inside the envelope was a plastic bag of goodies wrapped and sealed in a layer of cushioned paper.
The first look was just as I had pictured it to be — so much cuteness!!
Various candies – I should probably mention that everything (not unsurprisingly) is written in Japanese — the labels, the ingredients, everything. That said, I’m not entirely sure what most of these things are, so bare with my vague (possibly wrong) descriptions. 😉
The first package appears to be some kind of orange flavored hard candies with cream(?) inside. The middle package is strawberry-chocolate suckers. (No idea why the package mentions basketball and features the letter “W”. Weeeird.) The last teeny package looks to be another strawberry flavored candy dipped in chocolate. These are the times when it kinda sucks being vegan (and not being able to read Japanese).
Stickers and Correction Tape – How freakin’ adorable are these little stickers??! Ahhh! Love ’em! So tiny & puffy & happy! The correction tape is cute n’ all… but who actually uses correction tape? I don’t think I’ve ever used it in my life. White-Out, sure, but correction tape? Is it popular in Japan, or do they just buy it for the cute container? I wonder…
Hello Kitty Letter Set – This set is labeled “For sale in Japan only”, which makes me feel kinda special. haha It has 12 sheets of paper, 6 envelopes, and one sheet of stickers. I love the quotes on the paper: “Just being together is joy! Being friends is the best!”. Preach on, Hello Kitty!
More candies – I *think* the first package has Sailor Moon on it. I know nothing about anime, so I’m probably way off. Either way, it looks like it’s a grape flavored gummy candy. The second item says “Little Bobdog” and looks to be strawberry flavored. The only other English on the package says “We support your No-smoking”. (Uhhh…) The third package looks/feels like a grape flavored, possibly sour, gummy candy. Lastly, a Hello Kitty marshmallow-y treat with what looks to be chocolate inside.
Caramel(?) Corn – I’m guessing “Canael” corn is their way of describing caramel corn. I’d love to try this, but like the others, the ingredients are all in Japanese. 🙁
Sweets-themed Cloth Napkin(?) & Note Pad – The item on the left opens up to about 12″x12″ and has a little sewn-on place to write your name. The tag says that it’s 100% cotton, so I’m guessing it’s some sort of reusable napkin/hankie? The second item is an adorable notepad featuring candy & sweets. I would have LOVED this as a kid. (Okay, I kinda love it now too!)
File Folder – This is a plastic sweets-themed file folder. To quote the top left corner: “There are lots of information of delicious sweets on it”. 😉
Random Goodies – The top item is a fun little mirror pencil sharpener/comb eraser set. (It has a “working” mirror attached. Cute!) The second item is a felt keychain(?) of some kind of layered treat with cherries on top. The tiny grapes in the middle is an eraser, as is the last item — which is one of my favorite items in the package. I love miniature things and mini pocky with an eraser inside is just too flippin’ CUTE!
More Goodies – Hello Kitty pencil case (that looks like it may be made with PVC, which is kinda scary… though I’m sure everything I played with back in the day was made of it too)… A colorful pencil with a fun heart-shaped charm on the end… My Melody travel tissue pack.
This was definitely one of the cutest, most colorful packages I’ve ever gotten to review! I would have absolutely loved receiving a package like this when I was a kid. Hell, I clearly enjoyed it now. 🙂
If you’d like to buy a box yourself, or sign up for one of their subscriptions, go on over to the Kawaii Surprises site and check ’em out!
Disclosure: I received this package for review purposes. I was not compensated in any way. All opinions are my own.
