I reviewed my first Koala Crate back in February (“Colors”) and thought it was a great box for little ones. So of course I was happy when I was offered a chance to review their latest box — “Bugs”!
If you’re new to them, Koala Crate is a fun subscription box from the same company who runs Kiwi Crate. While Kiwi Crate is for kids ages 4 through 8, Koala Crate is geared towards younger tots ages 3 to 4.
Every month, Koala Crate sends your little one a box packed full of fun and education activities. Each crate will be based around a different theme and include a variety of art supplies, crafts, learning materials, and more. You’ll also receive a parent’s guide to help them complete each project. Every crate comes with a copy of “Imagine!” magazine (created in partnership with Highlights for Children) full of stories, games, and other engaging content for your preschooler.
Koala Crate subscriptions are $19.95/month (shipping included), or less with 6- and 12-month commitments. Be sure to look for the coupon code at the end of this post!
Let’s see what’s in the Koala Crate “Bugs!” box!
The “crate”!
A detailed instruction booklet lists all of the projects, the materials needed for each one, instructions, and more. There were 3 different activities for this month with additional play ideas.
The main activities were “Bug Dress Up”, “Bug Matching Game”, and “Bug Eye Viewer”. Each activity is rated in terms of grownup involvement and overall messiness. Everything in this month’s box has a “low” messiness rating. Yay! 😉
Bug Dress Up:
Bug Dress Up (uses Felt Cape, Felt Shapes, Foam Headband, Elastic Ribbon, Bendy Straws, Foam Circles) – Children can create their very own bug costume complete with wings and antennae. The kit includes a precut felt wing “cape” with attached velcro closure which your child can decorate with the felt shape stickers. There’s also a custom-fit foam headband and materials to create & attach bendy antennae. So cute! I love that everything is easily put together — you don’t even need scissors or glue!
Bug Matching Game:
Bug Matching Game (uses Bug Cards) – A simple, yet fun matching game that uses a set of colorful bug cards included in the box. The game can be played in a variety of ways. Some examples: Have your child find all of the bugs with blue wings… Have them find all of the bugs with the same number of spots… Etc, etc.
Bug Eye Viewer:
Bug Eye Viewer (uses Bug Eye Viewer & Bug Cards) – This activity gives kids the idea of what it’s like to see the world through the eyes of a bug. They can simply peek through the “bug eye viewer” to see a kaleidoscope effect of whatever they point it at. The photo above shows what it looks like when viewing one of the included bug cards.
Imagine! Magazine:
Imagine! Magazine – I love that they include a magazine/activity book in each box. Koala Crate partners with Highlights to create these and they’re perfect for this age group.
Once again, Koala Crate delivered a great box ideal for 3 and 4 year olds. The theme was appropriate for either gender and the activities were easy, yet fun (and educational too!).
If you’d like to sign up for Koala Crate, you can save $10 on your first month when you use coupon code “SHARE10″. I’m not sure when that expires, but if/when it does, you can still save 30% with my exclusive coupon code “ROSE30″ (good on Kiwi Crate, Doodle Crate, and Tinker Crate too!).
