January 2017 Loot Crate unboxing time!
If you still haven’t heard, Loot Crate is a monthly subscription box for fans of gamer/geek culture. Every month you’ll get a box packed with 6-8 items that can include toys, gear, figures, art, accessories, and more. They often (more often than not actually) send special limited edition Loot Crate exclusive items as well.
Disclosure: I received this box for review purposes. I was not compensated in any way. All opinions are my own. Post may contain affiliate and/or referral links.
Subscriptions are $21.99/month (price includes shipping), or less with longer plans. — You can save $3 on your first month with coupon code LOOTR3.
Okay, let’s see what’s inside the January 2017 Loot Crate!
The signature solid black Loot Crate box.
A peek inside!
The theme for January’s box was “Origins” and the mini mag/info booklet featured an interview with Rouge One: A Star Wars Story writer Gary Whitta, a look at Superman throughout the years, a brief history of video games, and more.
Exclusive Original “Jumpman” T-Shirt
I had no idea that the character we all know as Mario was first known as “Jumpman” in the original Donkey Kong game. Thanks for schoolin’ me, Loot Crate! Anywhooo… This exclusive shirt features a perfectly pixelated Jumpman/Mario design and I totally dig it. Definitely the best Loot Crate shirt of the year — and, uh, the only one. (Being that it’s January n’ all.) 😉
Exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tiki Muglet
I have no idea what one would use a “ceramic mini tiki mug” for, but I suppose if you’re a TMNT fan you’ll find one. Aside from maybe a shot glass, I guess you could plant a stick of bamboo in it? Functionality aside, subscribers could have received one of the 4 turtles or a rare Shredder variant.
Exclusive Captain America Golden Age Shield
An exclusive 1940’s Captain America official prop replica depicting the shield seen in Captain America: The First Avenger. The shield itself is made of high quality metal and it sits upon a plastic display stand, complete with scaled straps on the back. It even comes with its own certificate of authenticity from EFX Collectibles.
Exclusive Action Comics #1 Reprint
This is neat! — It’s an authentic replica reprint of Action Comics #1 printed on the original newsprint stock complete with the original 30’s era ads. It’s backed & bagged and includes a certificate of authenticity sealed inside. Very cool.
Exclusive January 2017 Loot Pin
January’s pin — featuring the iconic TMNT sewer logo — allowed subscribers to unlock free digital copies of Teenage Mutant Turtles #1-5 from IDW in HD and Guided View.
While I wasn’t crazy about tiny tiki mug or shield replica, I still thought this was a pretty decent Loot Crate. My favorite items this month were the Jumpman/Mario tee and the cool Action Comics replica reprint, both of which made up for the items I didn’t care for. 😉 — If you’d like to sign up for Loot Crate, you can save $3 on any subscription plan with coupon code “LOOTR3“!
Will
I seem to be the only one but the box said it comes with issues 1-5 free for the TMNT comics. Well I redeemed the code and it only gave me issue 1 free. The rest it is asking for paymenot to access. Kinda bummed
Wendy Rose
Weird. I can’t redeem mine since I received my box for review, so I don’t know if that’s normal. Let Loot Crate know and maybe they can help you out. 🙂
