A peek inside!
An info card (printed on the back of one of the recipe cards) revealed August’s theme: “Candle Making”. It listed this month’s featured oils, along with any included extras. It also provided a few safety tips for each oil/blend.
A note from Katie — recipe formulator & certified aromatherapist — revealed a bit more about this month’s theme.
August’s recipes provided clear instructions for whipping up the following:
- Cozy Nook Candle
- Fresh Escape Roll-On
- Honeyed Haven Candles
- Patio Breeze Citronella Candle
- Timber & Citrus Bliss Wax Melts
- Sunset Trail Diffuser Blend
A sheet of pre-printed stickers was also included for labeling your creations.
August’s oils included:
- Bergamot
- Timber
- Cassia
- Citronella
Simply Earth Bergamot Essential Oil
Fun Fact: Bergamot was named after a town in Italy — Bergamo — where Bergamot oil was first marketed. It has a fragrant citrus/floral aroma and is often used for its calming effect, as well as aiding digestion, deodorizing, promoting immunity, balancing cravings, and more.
Every Simply Earth oil is printed with a Simply Pure Promise™ that ensures that the product has been quality tested and is 100% pure. Ingredients are also clearly printed on every label.
Simply Earth Timber Essential Oil Blend
The only blend of August’s box, “Timber” contains a fragrant combination of cypress, cedarwood, sandalwood, patchouli, Peru balsam, and mandarin essential oils. Its slightly masculine vanilla/woodsy aroma makes it ideal for men’s DIY personal care products. It’s great for adding to shave butters, beard oils, body washes, and more.
Simply Earth Cassia Essential Oil
A close relative to cinnamon (with a similar scent), cassia essential oil is derived from the steamed distilled bark, leaves and twigs of the cassia tree. The warm & spicy oil is great for promoting circulation, aiding in digestion, calming the body/mind, cleaning, supporting female wellness, and plenty of other uses.
Simply Earth Java Citronella Essential Oil
Most people only associate citronella with being a natural bug repellent (which is AWESOME), but it also has many other uses. This fresh/citrusy oil can also help support joint function, boost your energy, reduce negative emotions, aid in cleaning, reduce the appearance of breakouts, and more.
DIY Candle Kit
The small packet above contains everything needed to make your own 1-ounce candle: all natural soy wax, a cotton wick, and a wick sticker. The only thing you’ll need to provide is the vessel.
Wick Centering Tool
The wooden stick/tool above is used for keeping your wick perfectly centered in its vessel as the melted wax hardens around it.
Floating Wicks
One of the recipes was for a “wax-less” candle that called for floating wicks. These are used by placing them in a container with water and a layer of vegetable oil & essential oils. Then simply light the wicks. The flame will go out when the wick has burned through the oil.
Beeswax Sheets and Cotton Candle Wicks
A small package of beeswax sheets was provided to create 3 rolled beeswax pillar candles. A long cotton wick (hidden behind the wax sheets above) was also included to trim as needed to fit inside each one.
Here are the recipes that I’ve made so far:
Cozy Nook Candle
Supplies needed: DIY Candle Kit, Bergamot Essential Oil, Cassia Essential Oil, Timber Essential Oil Blend, and a 1 ounce jar.
The first step was to open the DIY Candle Kit and remove the packet containing the wick & wick sticker.
Next, I used the wick sticker to adhere the wick to the bottom of my jar.
I then placed the wax (still in the bag) into the microwave for a little over 2 minutes until it was fully liquified. Once ready, I added the specified amount of essential oils.
After swirling the bag around to combine the melted wax and essential oils, I poured the mixture into the waiting jar.
I then placed the wick centering tool on top to keep the wick in place as the wax hardened.
When fully cooled, I placed the provided label onto the front of the jar, trimmed the wick, and it was ready to go!
Honeyed Haven Candles
Supplies needed: 3 Beeswax Sheets, Cotton Wick, Timber Essential Oil Blend, Bergamot Essential Oil, Citronella Essential Oil, and a Cotton Ball.
I began by removing the beeswax sheets from the packaging and laying the first one right on top.
I didn’t have a cotton ball handy, so I improvised by using a napkin to hold a few drops of the essential oils and carefully dabbed it along the surface of the wax sheet.
Next, I placed the cotton wick — that I had cut into 3 equal pieces — onto the edge of the sheet (with about 1/4 of an inch sticking out of the top) and began rolling it up.
I continued rolling until my candle was complete and then repeated the process two more times.
They turned out perfectly! — Love that pretty honeycomb pattern. 😀
Sunset Trail Diffuser Blend
Supplies needed: Timber Essential Oil Blend, Bergamot Essential Oil, Citronella Essential Oil, and Cassia Essential Oil.
The easiest of all the recipes, it simply required me to fill my diffuser with water, then add the specified amount drops of each of the essential oils above. Once added, I switched on the diffuser and let the fragrant aroma fill the room.
Sunset Trail Master Blend
Every monthly diffuser recipe also comes with instructions for making a “master blend” that gives you a pre-made supply to use as you wish.
Supplies needed: Timber Essential Oil Blend, Bergamot Essential Oil, Citronella Essential Oil, Cassia Essential Oil, and a 5 mL bottle*.
*Included in Big Bonus Box.
All you have to do is pour the specified amount of essential oil into the bottle…
…add the provided stickers — and you’re done!
Fresh Escape Roll-On
Supplies needed: Timber Essential Oil Blend, Bergamot Essential Oil, Citronella Essential Oil, Fractionated Coconut Oil*, and a 10mL Roll-On Bottle*.
*Included in Big Bonus Box.
This easy recipe simply involved placing a specified amount of essential oil into the roll-on bottle and filling the rest up with coconut oil.
Then just replace the cap and carefully position the sticker/label & it’s ready to use!
