I was recently sent a DIY Soap Nut Laundry Detergent Kit for review, so let’s check it out!
Everything was shipped in a medium-sized brown box with the Simply Earth logo on top & the name of the kit on the side.
A peek in the box!
Soap Nuts
“Soap nuts” are the dried shells (or husks) from the soapberry nut, which come from the Sapindus mukorossi tree. Despite their name, soap nuts are actually berries — making them totally safe for those with nut allergies. The shells of the soap nut contain a natural soap called saponin. When the nutshells absorb water, the saponin is released, creating a soaping effect. Saponin is 100% natural and biodegradable.
Two 16-oz Bottles
The kit will result in 32 ounces of liquid detergent, which will be divided into the two 16 ounce amber-colored bottles above.
Simply Earth Cypress Essential Oil
Cypress essential oil is known for its aromatic properties that help with emotional stability and relaxation. It’s also great for cleansing the skin, supporting joint function, relaxing muscles, promoting immunity, and deodorizing.
Simply Earth Pink Grapefruit Essential Oil
Grapefruit essential oil has been found to have many benefits including clearing blemished skin, rejuvenating dull hair, boosting your mood, and supporting mental focus. It’s also great for balancing food cravings. Plus, it smells really good.
Natural Solubilizer
This all-natural emulsifier allows essential oils to evenly disperse within a water-based mixture. It’s plant-derived and contains zero harsh ingredients.
Geogard ECT
Geogard ECT is an eco-friendly preservative that is made up of safe, natural ingredients. It’s used to extend the shelf life of your DIY skincare products.
Label Stickers
Two pre-printed label stickers were provided for applying to your completed bottles of detergent.
“Grapefruit & Cypress Natural Liquid Laundry Detergent” Recipe Card
The all-important recipe card listed all of the materials needed, along with complete step-by-step instructions (more shown on back, not pictured.)
Okay, time to make some detergent!
First, I needed to add 4 cups of distilled water to a pan. (I didn’t have any distilled, so I had to use filtered.)
Next, I opened up the bag of soap nuts and poured them all into the water.
I then covered the pan, allowed the water to boil, then turned it down to simmer for one hour. (As you can see by the messy rim, the mixture did start to boil over at one point. Oops!)
Once cooled, I scooped all of the soap nuts out and was left with this brown-colored “broth”. 😉
In a small bowl, I added the essential oils…
…followed by the natural solubilizer and Geogard ECT preservative.
That mixture was then combined with the soap nuts “broth” and poured into the waiting bottles.
Bottle #1 all filled up!
The final step was to add the label sticker and my detergent was complete. 🙂
Simply Earth’s new “DIY Soap Nut Liquid Laundry Detergent Kit” allowed me to make my own liquid laundry detergent using all natural, non-toxic ingredients. As with all of Simply Earth’s DIY kits, the instructions were clear and easy to follow. The trickiest part for me was transferring the liquid into the provided bottles (even with a funnel it got pretty messy). Otherwise, it was as easy as boiling water. Literally. 😉 — If you’d like to purchase your own “DIY Soap Nut Liquid Laundry Detergent Kit“, make sure to use coupon code “WENDYROSE10” at checkout to save 10%!
