A peek inside!
Lip Balm Tubes (50)
A package of fifty reusable clear tubes was provided for holding your DIY lip balm creations. Each tube holds 0.18 ounces and measures 2.75″ long by 0.6″ wide. (Better photos of the tubes will be shown later in the review.)
Shea Butter (12 oz)
Shea butter — a fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree — is widely used in cosmetics as a moisturizer, salve or lotion. It works as a 100% natural emollient to soften & hydrate the skin, and is a key ingredient in this DIY lip balm.
Beeswax Pellets
Used in skin care products, these all natural beeswax pellets act as a humectant, locking in moisture and preventing water loss. Beeswax is also helpful in soothing, softening, and protecting the skin (including your lips!).
Lip Balm Filling Tray & Spatula
The little tray above is designed to help you easily fill up to 50 lip balm tubes at once! — Just snap your empty tubes into the holes, pour in your balm recipe, and remove the overflow with the spatula once it solidifies. Easy!!
Label Stickers
A set of 50 pre-printed label stickers were provided for each completed tube of lip balm. They include the flavor, weight, and a full list of ingredients.
A separate, smaller box held the remaining materials/ingredients.
“Sweet Mint Lip Balm” Recipe Card
The all-important recipe card listed all of the materials needed, along with complete step-by-step instructions. There was also a QR code to access a free “cheat sheet” and bonus workshop.
Simply Earth Spearmint Essential Oil
Spearmint is not only great for mints & chewing gum — its oil has many health benefits including aiding digestion, soothing head discomfort, supporting respiration, promoting stomach wellness, and more. It has a fresh, minty scent that’s slightly sweeter than peppermint.
Simply Earth Sweet Orange Essential Oil
In ancient times, dried orange peels were often used in Chinese medicine to treat coughs and colds. Today we use its oil for a variety of purposes, including to help promote rest, support heart wellness, brighten the skin, uplift your mood, and more.
Cetyl Alcohol
Cetyl alcohol is an oil soluble substance that can be added to liquids to make them thicker. It’s ideal to use for making body butters, balms, lotions, and other DIY creations.
Almond Oil
Often used as a carrier oil, almond oil is lightweight and easily absorbed into the skin. When added to homemade lip balm, it can help to moisturize and nourish your lips.
Alright, time to make some lip balms!
The first step was to prepare the lip balm tubes by removing their lids and inserting each one into the provided tray as shown above. — My daughters LOVE lip balm and were more than happy to help with this kit, so most of it was done by them. (They’re both 12, so it’s definitely tween-friendly. 😉 )
Next, we measured out the (not-so-exact) amount of shea butter that would serve as the main ingredient in the balms.
Our shea butter was then joined by the almond oil, beeswax, and cetyl alcohol.
The mixture was then heated in the microwave at increments of 30 seconds until all of the ingredients were fully melted together. — The glass cup got very hot, so I handled the transport back to our work area.
Once liquified, it was time to add the essential oils. First we added the sweet orange…
…followed by the spearmint.
My girls asked if they could use some mica powder to give the balm a pink tint, so we added a few shakes of fuchsia and pearl. — So pretty!
Once the color was added, we carefully (okay, maybe not so carefully 😉 ) poured the mixture onto the tray and into the awaiting tubes.
There were a few tubes that were left empty, but that was likely due to our not-so-exact measuring of the shea butter. 😉
After letting them harden in the fridge for a few hours, the balms were ready to be freed.
But first, we used the provided spatula to remove the excess product from the tray and smooth out the tops.
Thanks to the mica powder, the now opaque mixture turned a pretty pale pink shade. — Perfect for a sweet mint flavored lip balm. 🙂
The next step was to put all of the lids back on…
…and add the labels.
They turned out so cute!! — The addition of mica powder was a great call on my girls’ part and they were thrilled with the result. These will be a fun little gift for them to pass out to family and friends this holiday season. 😀
Simply Earth’s new “DIY Lip Balm Kit” makes it incredibly easy to make your own homemade lip balms — up to 50 of them, to be exact. 😉 The kit included all of the supplies needed, though we did decide to add our own mica powder (also from Simply Earth!) for a hint of color. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, making it a fun project to complete with my daughters. 🙂 — If you’d like to purchase your own “DIY Lip Balm Kit“, make sure to use coupon code “WENDYROSE10” at checkout to save 10%!
