Everything was shipped in a medium-sized brown box with the Simply Earth logo on top & the name of the kit on the side.
A peek in the box!
Bottles & Pump Top Attachments
The kit included two 8-ounce amber colored bottles with pump top attachments. These will be used to store the finished lotions.
Simply Earth Lemon Essential Oil
The kit contained two 100% pure essential oils! First up was Lemon, which has a universally appealing aroma and can be utilized in a variety of ways. Lemon essential oil is great for detoxifying, reducing the appearance of breakouts, easing seasonal discomfort, cleaning, promoting stomach wellness, and more.
Simply Earth Bulgarian Lavender Essential Oil
Bulgarian Lavender can be used to help fight inflammation, relieve depression, reduce stress, and realign the immune system. This plant is specifically grown in Bulgaria and is different in scent to other lavender oils, as it features stronger floral and fruity notes. Its naturally antiseptic/anti-fungal characteristics make it ideal for treating acne and other skin ailments.
Cetyl Alcohol
Cetyl alcohol is an oil soluble substance that can be added to liquids to make them thicker. It’s ideal to use for making body butters, balms, lotions, and other DIY creations.
Sunflower Seed Oil
Sunflower seed oil is a lightweight, 100% natural oil thats great for both face and hair care products. Two 1-ounce bottles were provided.
Emulsifying Wax
Emulsifying wax is the go-to product for giving your DIY recipes texture and consistency. It allows you to mix oil and water in lotion recipes and also prolongs its shelf life.
Vegetable Glycerin
I’m already quite familiar with vegetable glycerin, as I use it regularly to make homemade hand soap. 🙂 It’s a natural humectant that helps draw water into your skin to moisturize & improve its appearance.
Geogard ECT
Geogard ECT is an eco-friendly preservative that is made up of safe, natural ingredients. It’s used to extend the shelf life of your DIY skincare products.
Label Stickers
Two pre-printed label stickers were provided for applying to your completed bottles of lotion.
“Lavender Lemon Lotion” Recipe Card
The all-important recipe card listed all of the materials needed, along with complete step-by-step instructions (more shown on back, not pictured.)
Alright, time to make some lotion!
The very first step was to trim the bottoms of the pump straws to better fit into the bottles. The photo above shows the original length…
…and here’s the trimmed version. — Much better!
I then filled a large bowl with ice and set it aside for later.
Next, I filled a glass measuring cup with 1 3/4 cups of distilled water (I used filtered) and 1 tbsp vegetable glycerin.
I then measured out 1/4 cup of sunflower seed oil in a separate container…
…and poured it into a glass jar, along with the required amount of emulsifying wax and cetyl alcohol.
Next, I filled a pot up with about 2 inches of water and placed both glass containers inside. I let them sit on medium low heat until all of the wax was fully melted. (Both mixtures were supposed to be 155 degrees F, but I didn’t have a thermometer so I just hoped for the best. 😉 )
I carefully transferred the measuring cup to the waiting bowl of ice and used an immersion blender to whip the oil mixture into it until it was close to room temperature.
The more I stirred it, the thicker the liquid became.
I then grabbed a small bowl and poured in the Geogard ECT preservative & the required essential oils.
To that bowl, I added a small amount of the original mixture and blended both together.
Once mixed, I poured it into the cooling lotion and stirred once more.
Lastly, I used a small funnel to transfer the lotion equally into the two waiting bottles.
After filling them both, I popped on the provided labels and my lotions were complete!
Simply Earth’s new “DIY Lotion Kit” was a great project for anyone looking to use/purchase skincare without any questionable ingredients. It’s awesome knowing exactly what went into my lotion and it doesn’t hurt that it smells amazing too! 😉 As with all of Simply Earth’s DIY kits, the instructions were clear and easy to follow. I didn’t have the required thermometer, but the lotion seems to have turned out just fine without it. — If you’d like to purchase your own “DIY Lotion Kit“, make sure to use coupon code “WENDYROSE10” at checkout to save 10%!
