The Story Box is a new children’s subscription box that sends two carefully selected hardcover books to your door every month.
The books are chosen based on many different factors with a preference towards those that are colorful, have great illustrations, good vocabulary, good story line, rhyming, alliteration, and more. Along with the books, you’ll also receive a parent guide that is specific to the books in your box and organized into various age groups. (The Story Box books are intended for children ages 1 through 7.) The guide is written by a nationally certified speech-language pathologist and includes tips for making the most out of reading time, ways to encourage communication, and even suggested activities to go along with the particular books.
Subscriptions are $21.99/month, or less with multi-month commitments. Shipping is always free.
Let’s see what’s in the February 2016 The Story Box!
The books were shipped in a large flat box with a green The Story Box logo on top.
A peek inside.
A letter from the founders welcomed you to the subscription and stressed the importance of reading to little ones.
The back of the welcome letter featured a guide to adapting the included books to various age groups.
Friends by Michael Foreman ($14.90) – A sweet story about a cat who feels bad for his goldfish friend who never gets to leave his bowl. One day, he decides to take him out to the water and set him free, but goldfish doesn’t want to leave his friend. So instead, the cat carries him around in a little pail and together they explore the world.
Big Bouffant by Kate Hosford ($15.30) – An inspiring tale about a little girl who wants a hairstyle different from everyone else in her classroom. She asks her mother to help her create a big bouffant, which brings laughter and eventually admiration from her classmates. Soon, all of the other girls have bouffants too. (Even some of the boys.) Not wanting to look like everyone else again, she has to figure out a new way to stand out…
Each of the books came with its own parent guide which listed language concepts for each reading level, as well as hands-on activities to try that are based on the book.
I was really impressed with The Story Box! The books they selected were both totally new to me and I love the messages that they portrayed. I was particularly drawn to the little girl in the Big Bouffant who was all about having her own style. That’s something I can definitely relate to and hope that my girls also come to embrace. Value-wise, the total of both books (using Amazon prices) is just over $30. So not only do you get discounted books, but you also have the additional bonus of the parent guides/activity ideas to go along with them. Win/win!
