Bean Box October 2014 Review & Giveaway

Bean Box is a brand new monthly subscription box that features coffee from Seattle’s top-rated coffee roasters. Each month you’ll receive four 1.7 ounce bags of whole coffee beans — enough for about 15 cups — sourced from the city known for its coffee obsession. It’s super fresh too! First look. The coffee was nicely packed under a layer of tissue paper and the lid informed me that the beans were roasted with love. Awww. I don’t know if love had anything to do with it, but the box smelled flipping amazing. Mmm.

An information card listed each roast and gave a little background on the companies behind them. A Boehm’s Encore mocha chocolate was included as a little treat to go with your brew. Also, if you love the roasts you get, you can reorder the full size right in the Bean Box online store.

I had planned on digging out my old Magic Bullet to grind these beans, but found myself putting it off so much that I was afraid I wouldn’t get this box reviewed until December. (My Keurig has made me incredibly lazy.) So that said, I can only review these based on their descriptions. Honestly, since I’m not exactly a coffee connoisseur, my opinion wouldn’t really hold much water anyway. Just sayin’.

Kuma Coffee Guatemala la Esperanza – According to the info card, Kuma is known for their “precision roasting and award-winning coffees”. Tasting notes: Semi-sweet chocolate, nougat, vanilla, Rainier cherry, and grape. I actually had to Google “tasting notes” because I didn’t realize that coffee could have such distinct (non-artificial) flavors based on where it’s grown, how it’s roasted, etc. I guess it’s kind of obvious, but I’m new to this whole whole bean thing.

Herkimer Coffee Drip Blend – This blend is made from Honduran beans and is said to have “light acidity with a clean finish”. Tasting notes: A hint of cherry with caramelized sugar and chocolate.

Lighthouse Roaster’s Choice – Lighthouse is one of the first cafes in Seattle to roast their beans on site. They roast them in small batches daily using vintage cast iron roasters. This is their signature blend and features “Ethiopian, Sumatran and Latin high-grown Arabicas”. It’s described as being a very bold roast, which I’m definitely a fan of.

Longshoreman’s Daughter Ethiopian Yirgacheffe – Bean Box describes Yirgacheffe as being “the gateway to discovering artisan coffee”, thanks to its tea-like quality. I suppose it would make sense for me to sample this one first then! It’s sourced from Ethiopia and said to have notes of citrus, cane sugar, and black tea.

Clearly, Bean Box is a great subscription for coffee lovers and anyone interested in exploring artisanal beans. Plus, $20 for 15 cups (or more) of premium coffee is a pretty good deal!
