Sun Twist is a new subscription box company that offers boxes for babies, toddlers, and moms. They’re family owned and promise to send you “4-6 items of the best products” that they can find. (More on that later.)
They offer a Baby/Kid’s box ($18/month), a Candle Addiction box ($24/mo.), a Mommy box ($22/mo.), and a Jewelry box ($22/mo.). Shipping is not included.
I had heard a lot of buzz about this company not being “legit”, so I was curious to see what was up. I didn’t want to believe internet gossip before I had a chance to see a box for myself. I contacted Sun Twist about a review, and this is the box I was sent for a 2-year old girl…
The box came shipped in a plain brown, well, box. It was sent via priority mail. I’m not sure if that’s standard, or because it was a review box. Either way, it did ship fast.
2 Small Tubs of Generic Dough – I was immediately unimpressed when I pulled these out of the box. I had heard that they were sending a lot of dollar store items and this pretty much confirmed it. Except I think the Dollar Tree sells these in a 4-pack. We have a few tubs of eco-friendly dough from Citrus Lane waiting for the girls to use, so I’m not sure if I’ll bother with these cheaper ones. (Retail Price: $0.50?)
Dora “Magic Towel” – Yep, another Dollar Tree item. My girls don’t watch Dora and they have a zillion washcloths so I’m not sure what to do with this. (Retail Price: $1.00)
Disney Princess Tote – I’m kinda anti-Disney so I don’t even know which princess this is. I’ve seen others confirm that it is indeed another Dollar Tree item. (Retail Price: $1.00)
Bright Starts Giggables Wobble & Roll! Ball – This is probably the most “valuable” item in the box. I was actually really happy to see it because one of my girls LOVES kitties. It’s a cute plastic ball that makes sounds and talks when you roll or shake it. (Amazon Price: $6.25)
Disney Peter Pan Book – Another Dollar Tree item. Again, we’re not Disney fans, but we love books of any kind so no biggie. (Retail Price: $1.00)
Disney Minnie Mouse Hair Brush – Yep, another Disney item from Dollar Tree. 🙁 Luckily my girls like playing with brushes, so it’ll get some use.
Build & Play Wooden Shape Playset – I’m not sure if this is from Dollar Tree, but it’s definitely cheaply made. There’s glue seeping out of the holes where the pegs are attached to the plank and some of the pieces were stuck together when I opened it up. Quality aside, my girls do like these stacker type toys. (Retail Price: $1-2?)
“Mother” Mirror/Glass Plaque – This was labeled “for mom” and I’m not even sure what to say about it. Sure, the sentiment is nice, so I almost feel bad tearing it apart… But… It’s most definitely dollar store quality (you can see where the coating(?) rubbed off around the flowers) and it just looks… Tacky. I mean, if my girls picked it out themselves and gave it to me as a gift, I would adore it. But getting it in a subscription box? Eh… (Retail Price: $1.00?)
So that’s my Sun Twist baby box. Do I think it’s *awful*? Eh, no. But that said, I didn’t actually purchase it myself. If I were a regular customer and paid $18 (plus shipping) I’d most definitely be disappointed.
Unfortunately, I think there was a bit of deception going on as to what would be included in the box. I’ve seen screenshots of the site that show nicer, higher end name brand items that led some customers to believe that they’d be getting high quality products. It wasn’t until word got out about the dollar store toys that they updated their site to include the type of things I received in this box. Definitely not a good way to start a business.
I couldn’t imagine paying $18 plus shipping for a little over $10 worth of low quality products when you can pay a bit more (or less, depending on how savvy you are) for Citrus Lane and get great, high quality items. (Just compare this box to the September Citrus Lane box I reviewed earlier today. Total no-brainer.)
I’ve never warned anyone against signing up for a subscription before, but unless they do a total 180 and improve things ASAP, sadly I’d have to say to avoid Sun Twist and treat your kids to a $10 Dollar Tree spree instead.
Update as of 9/20: This was just posted on Sun Twist’s Facebook page: “Due to recent feedback on our Baby/Kids boxes we are removing it from the site. Only until we feel we have enough Brands to work with. Our most important goal is to keep our customers happy and the little ones smiling. Our Mommy and Spa Box is now combined to a Beauty Box. Candle Addiction Box and Jewelry Box is still going strong. Thank you for all the great feedback. Have a great day.” All of the negative posts on the wall were removed as well.

Thank you Wendy! With all the talk in the beginning I almost ordered. I hear all the time of dollar stores toys having high levels of lead in them as well. That being said I love the dollar store for craft items and books and puzzles and such. Glad they don’t skimp on shipping but thanks for your honest review so people don’t go in blind.

No problem! They’ve since pulled the baby/kid’s boxes from their site due to all of the complaints. 😉
