Surprise Ride is a monthly subscription box that makes themed activity kits for children ages 6 to 11.
Each box will feature a different theme — from art, to geography, to outer space, and everything in between. Past themes have included Bees, Rockets, Green Thumb, Picasso, Newspapers, DIY Gifts, and Carnivals (all of which are for sale in their online shop!). Every Surprise Ride box will include all of the materials for two hands-on activities, as well as a book, healthy snack, and fun extras.
Subscriptions are $29.99/month, or less with multi-month commitments. Shipping is free. — For a limited time, you can save $10 on your first month with coupon code “LOVE10“!
Let’s see what’s in the February 2016 Surprise Ride “Smile” box!
The big blue and orange box was shipped via 3-day priority mail.
A peek inside!
An info card revealed the theme of the month — Smile — and listed all of the items I’d find in the box.
Project #1: Make Real Toothpaste – Everything was included for your child to make their own tube of toothpaste! The kit included peppermint extract powder, baking soda, glycerin, a mixing cup, stirring spoon, toothpaste tube, and a tooth clip.
The process was pretty straightforward. Just pour the peppermint powder, baking soda, and glycerin into the provided cup and mix. Once blended, transfer to the tube, secure it with the tooth clip, and you’re good to go!
Yep, smells like toothpaste.
The end result turned out great… Unfortunately, my girls weren’t big fans of the flavor. I tried it myself and I gotta say, it was a little too… baking soda-y. Either we didn’t mix it good enough, or we’re just way too used to the super minty store-bought paste (or in their case, the Honest Company strawberry kid’s paste!).
Project 2: Create Toothbrush Splatter Art – Your child can decorate their own toothbrush holder using a fun “painting” technique. Materials included a ceramic toothbrush holder, painting toothbrush, blue paint, paint dish, and an apron.
We were supposed to create a splatter effect by dipping the toothbrush into the paint and pulling back the bristles in the direction of the ceramic holder… But we opted to make it a little less messy and just let the girls decorate it any way they wanted using the toothbrush to apply the paint. Being that they freaked out whenever a tiny bit of paint got on their fingers, this was probably the best way to go. 😉
The end result! I actually think it looks pretty neat. Almost like an abstract landscape with mountains and a deep blue sun. 🙂
What if you had Animal Teeth!? Book – This fun book introduces children to the unique teeth sported by various animals and shows them how silly people would look with those same teeth (via whimsical illustrations). It also stresses the importance of taking care of your teeth and being happy with the ones you have. 🙂
Chloe was really into all the silly teeth pictures. Did you know that crocodiles don’t have to open their mouths at the dentist because their teeth are already exposed? 😉
Dr. John’s Inspired Sweets Tooth-Shaped Lollipops – These cute tooth-shaped lollipops were developed by dental professionals and contain zero sugar. Instead, they’re sweetened Xylitol, a natural extract of the birch tree. They’re also free of artificial sweeteners, flavors, and colors. My kiddos loved ’em!
Dentist’s Mirror – A dentist’s mirror was provided for your child to get a better look at their back teeth — just like a real dentist.
Wind-Up Chattering Teeth – Ah, the classic wind-up teeth toy! My girls had a lot more fun with this than I thought they would!
A booklet full of neat teeth facts was also included for additional learning.
My girls and I really enjoyed our first Surprise Ride box! I love that they include not only fun & educational projects, but also a book, snack, and lots of extra goodies related to the theme. Definitely a great box for little ones! Remember — For a limited time, you can save $10 on your first month with coupon code “LOVE10“! (Also, be sure to enter the giveaway below!)
