The Personal Barber is a subscription box from the UK that sends you a monthly selection of wet shaving products.
The first box you’ll receive upon signing up will contain everything you need to get started with a wet shaving routine — a classic safety razor, brush, soaps, blades and a step-by-step shaving guide. Each box thereafter will feature additional shaving products including soaps, creams, oils, balms and aftershaves.
If you already practice wet shaving and don’t need an “intro box”, you can choose the Advanced Box when you sign up. This is the exact same subscription except that the first month (the one with the razor and brush) is skipped so you move straight onto the recurring monthly box that contains the soaps, oils, balms, etc.
Subscriptions are £24.95/month with free shipping in the UK, or an additional £7 worldwide. (You can save 20% on your first month with coupon code “2ROSEBUDS“.)
Let’s see what’s in the Personal Barber “Intro Box”!
The box was shipped via Royal Air Mail and arrived in quite good condition, considering.
A peek inside.
A 2-sided welcome card introduces you to the tools of the trade — including how to use them and the proper care needed to keep them working like new.
Another card included a run-down of the contents in the box, along with descriptions and instructions for each item. The reverse side included a step-by-step guide to achieving the perfect shave.
The Personal Barber Double Edged Safety Razor – An ideal razor for the beginner wet shaver, this has a thin head to give you nice control without having to apply too much pressure. It’s made of three parts, which makes it easy to replace a blade by unscrewing the handle and placing the blade between both head pieces, then simply reassembling.
Treet Platinum & Polsilver Super Iridium Replacement Blades – The Treet blades are made in Pakistan and are ideal for light/normal hair, while the Russian Polsilvers are better for thicker beards.
The Personal Barber Synthetic Hair Shaving Brush – I was happy to see that this brush was made with synthetic hair, as opposed to animal. The info card states that this is somewhere between badger hair and boar hair in terms of softness, but is much easier to maintain — just flick dry and you’re good to go.
Speick Active Shaving Cream – Speick is a German company that’s been making quality shaving products for over 80 years. This cream is free of synthetic fragrance/color, parabens, silicones, and preservatives. It has a slight citrusy scent and easily lathers for a smooth shave.
Scaramouche & Fandango Hydrator – This easily absorbed, high quality moisturizer tones the skin while helping to combat the signs of fatigue. It’s made in the UK using mainly naturally derived ingredients and is never tested on animals.
Scaramouche & Fandango Face Scrub – (Okay, I’m just now getting the Queen reference after typing the name out twice and getting “Bohemian Rhapsody” stuck in my head. Well played.) Onto the scrub… It’s an exfoliating gel made with prickly pear extract and (unfortunately) micro beads. For some reason I thought they were already banned in the UK, but I guess not? Ah well.
Overall, I’d say The Personal Barber is a great subscription box for anyone who enjoys (or would like to learn) the ritual of wet shaving. I like that they included so much helpful information in the intro box — the step-by-step shaving guides, the best way to care for your “tools”, etc. While I didn’t do a cost breakdown, all of the items seemed of good quality, so I’d say the value was definitely there.
Remember, if you’d like to sign up, you can save 20% on your first month with coupon code “2ROSEBUDS“!
