Let’s see what’s in the Think Outside “Backpacking” Intro box!
Everything was shipped in a small brown box with green outdoors themed graphics.
A peek inside!
Since this is the first box in the series, it included a welcome letter that explained what to expect over the course of the subscription.
Also included was a map/poster representing the journey you’ll take and the themes you’ll explore with each box. Once you’ve mastered the skills for each theme, you can proudly color in the corresponding icon at the bottom of the map.
Educational Booklet
A full color, 20+ page booklet provided a TON of information relating to properly building your pack, identifying/using the items in this month’s box, honing your survival skills, wildlife facts, hiking etiquette, games, and more.
Backpack
The star of this month’s box was the super roomy, yet very lightweight backpack above. Perfect for day hikes, the pack is made of durable ripstop fabric and can hold up to 30 liters. It features a padded back with water bladder pocket, an adjustable chest strap, water bottle holder, an emergency whistle, an ID holder, inner pockets, and more. It also folds down to a compact size for easy storage when not in use. My kiddos are planning on utilizing this bag for upcoming sleepovers and may have already started packing it with random “essentials” from their room. 😉
Bear Bell
One of the last things you want to stumble upon while enjoying the great outdoors is a big ol’ bear. Or even a lil’ one, for that matter. To lessen the chance of an encounter, attach the bell above to your clothing or backpack to alert bears (and other wildlife) that you’re approaching. There’s also a magnet built into the band which you can attach to the bell to silence the noise when not needed.
Metal Ring
Resource Cards
Each box will include a set of theme-based resource cards that can be clipped onto the metal ring above. The cards are made of thin plastic to withstand the weather and not weigh down your pack.
(Here they are attached to the ring.)
Paracord & Carabiner
Paracords are great to have on hand for basic camping/hiking jobs, as well as emergency situations. It can help to secure a tent, be turned into a sling for your arm, serve as a tourniquet, secure things to your backpack, and much more. This month’s booklet includes a step-by-step tutorial on how to make a DIY paracord keychain using the cord and metal carabiner shown above.
Think Outside Pencil
This isn’t just your standard pencil — it changes color! When held in your hand/grasp, the heat-sensitive coating changes from orange to yellow from the warmth of your body. Cool!!
Postcard
Send a snail mail message to a friend in morse code using the postcard above. Additional morse code activities were included in the booklet as well.
ID card/Geocaching Info
Also included was an ID card to slide into the plastic sleeve inside your backpack, as well as a bit about geocaching.
Think Outside Box is a great subscription to encourage kiddos to power down their electronics and explore the great outdoors. The intro box provided a nice starting point by including a versatile backpack and other helpful accessories to make the most of any adventure. I was also impressed by the educational booklet which was loaded with information, activities, challenges, and more. 😀 — Thinking of signing up?
