Ivy Kids July Kit Review, Discount Code & Giveaway! Ends 5/13/14

Ivy Kids is a new monthly activity box for children aged 3 through 8. It was founded by a certified early childhood educator, turned stay-at-home mom who had begun creating her own activities in order to entertain and educate her kiddos. She found that when she incorporated characters from books into the activities, her children became more engaged. After making kits for her friends and family, who all seemed to love the concept, Ivy Kids was born.

Each Ivy Kids kit contains more than ten activities, along with a book which all of the activities are based upon. The games, projects, and crafts are all designed to “develop fine and gross motor muscles, build math and literacy skills, encourage reading comprehension, and promote scientific thinking”. All of the materials you’ll need are included right in your kit, as well as instructions and age modifications for each project.

I was recently sent both the July and August Ivy Kids kits for review. They were SO packed full of stuff that I’m going to do two separate reviews. This review is for July’s kit.

Upon opening the box, I found a handy guide pasted to the lid which listed all of the projects I’d find inside.

July’s featured book was “Jump, Frog, Jump!” by Robert Kalan. It’s a great book for younger kiddos that includes the line “Jump, frog, jump!” throughout, while the frog tries to escape being eaten by various creatures. (It has a ton of positive reviews from parents on Amazon, if that means anything to you!)

The photo above shows all of the activities in the box. Well, all that I could fit in one photo! I’m not going to go into a ton of detail about each activity (that would take forever), but I will list them all with photos so you can see exactly what was included.

“Feed the Frog” – This involves decorating a green cup with paper arms & legs, then rolling the die to see how many insects the frog should eat. Your child uses the plastic tongs to pick up the corresponding amount of bugs.

“Create Your Own Frog Habitat” – Everything is included to make a mini habitat for all of the little plastic frogs included in the kit. First, you and your child will read through the “All About Frogs” booklet, which will help them learn more about their little green friends. Next, they’ll use sand, play dough, and plastic insects to create a frog’s dream home.

“Lily Pad Scatter Jump” and “Lily Pad Line Jump” – There are 2 different activities that utilize these numbered foam lily pads. Scatter Jump involves calling out one of the numbers and having your child jump on the corresponding pad. Line Jump has you lining up the pads in numerical order, then calling out a number and having your child jump to as many pads as instructed by you.

“Story Sticks” – After you’ve read “Jump, Frog, Jump!”, you and your child can use these character sticks to re-enact the story.

“Frog Puppet” – Your little one can use all of the materials provided to make their own silly frog puppet. There’s also a sheet that you can help them fill out where they can name him, list his favorite things to eat, etc. Cute!

“Letter Jump” – For this one, you lay out the letter sheets and have your child push on the little frogs to make them “jump” towards the letters. You then ask them which letter it landed out, what sound it makes, etc.

“Race to the Pond Game” – This is a cute board game that involves collecting insects. It helps your little one practice counting skills and early math.

“Five Green and Speckled Frogs” – Five froggy finger puppets are included, as well as a sheet of song lyrics. You put the puppets on your fingers and act out the song while your child sings along.

Door Knob Hanger – This was just a fun bonus item that’s not counted as an actual “activity”. When you order a 6-month subscription, they send an extra item personalized with your child’s name on it. Fun!

I’m totally impressed with the first Ivy Kids kit! There’s so many fun activities and it’s great that they include tips to tailor each one to your child’s current age. I also love that everything is based on a different book each month — such a smart concept!
