This is actually my second Birchbox review for August, since I also picked up the guest curated “Candidly Nicole” box (reviewed here).
If you’re new to Birchbox, it’s basically a monthly subscription box that sends you 4-5 grooming, beauty, and lifestyle samples for just $10/month. When you sign up you take a style quiz and they send you products that best fit your profile. Both well-known and up-and-coming brands are included, all in generously sized multi-use samples.
Their rewards program is easily one of the best around. You earn points for reviewing your samples, referring friends, and purchasing full sized products. Each review is worth 10 points and referrals are 50 points. Every 100 points gives you $10 to spend in their shop. The points rack up fast and there’s no limit to how many you can earn. The shop is full of great products including candles, cosmetics, home accessories, tea, chocolate, and lots more goodies. Since each box contains at least 5 samples, you’ll already be racking up 50 points after you review them. So it’s sort of like paying $5 per box instead of $10, since you get that $5 in store credit. Nice!
Let the August 2015 Birchbox unboxing begin!
I love this month’s box! So cute. I think it’s my favorite design yet.
August’s box was all about soaking up the last bits of summer.
As always, the info card listed each item inside the box, as well as a brief description and retail prices for the full-sized versions.
Unfortunately, the cap on one of my items came off during transit and made a bit of a mess. Thankfully, everything was salvaged.
LAQA & Co. Cheeky Lip (~$5) – I might as well start with the culprit. This is both a lip and cheek stain in an easy to apply crayon-like applicator. It’s a lot brighter than I thought it would be and I’m kinda bummed that it opened up in the box since I’m kinda stuck with it now. Ah well.
Death Valley Dry Shampoo (~$4.50) – This was my sample choice for the month. I wasn’t too thrilled about any of the options, so I just went with this figuring I could swap/sell it easily. I just can’t get into the whole dry shampoo craze.
Air Repair Complexion-Boosting Moisturizer (~$2.50) – According to the info card, this cream is “packed with antioxidants and humectants” to hydrate and revitalize your skin. I have a current moisturizer that I’m pretty happy with, but maybe I’ll give this a try.
Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle (~$4) – I have so many leave-in conditioners thanks to beauty boxes. I might try this one though, since it’s supposed to lock in color and my red fades pretty fast.
Coola Environmental Repair Plus Radical Recovery After Sun Lotion (~$4) – I can always use after-sun care, since I tend to get a bit of sunburn every summer. This contains agave to help sooth, moisturize, and protect the skin post-sun.
While I don’t hate it, this definitely isn’t my favorite Birchbox. I rarely wear lip products, so the lip/cheek crayon was a miss (plus I wasn’t too happy that it opened up in the box)… I’m not down with dry shampoo, I don’t really need a new moisturizer, and while I’ll probably try out the other 2 products, I’m not exactly thrilled with ’em. Ah well. Still a good value as always.
If you’d like to sign up for Birchbox, new customers can get 100 points when you sign up with this link and use coupon code “BBJETBLUE10“– 100 points is equal to $10.00 to spend in their shop. Since the box itself is $10/month, it’s like getting your first one for FREE!
