Let’s check out my June 2016 Book of the Month box!
The box!
A peek inside.
As always, the book was shrink-wrapped to a sturdy piece of cardboard to keep it from getting damaged in transit.
The box included a note from Morgan Jerkins, one of the guest judges for June, who chose the book I received — “Modern Lovers” by Emma Straub. Every box also comes with a bookmark featuring a famous book-themed quote.
Also included this month was a postcard designed with the same artwork as my chosen book. Neat!
Modern Lovers by Emma Straub – I decided to go with a totally different genre this month, since I’ve been sticking to mainly thrillers lately. Modern Lovers takes a peek into the lives of a group of old friends/former college bandmates who are now nearing fifty and facing new challenges as they watch their own children grow into the young adults that they once were.
From Amazon:
Back in the band’s heyday, Elizabeth put on a snarl over her Midwestern smile, Andrew let his unwashed hair grow past his chin, and Zoe was the lesbian all the straight women wanted to sleep with. Now nearing fifty, they all live within shouting distance in the same neighborhood deep in gentrified Brooklyn, and the trappings of the adult world seem to have arrived with ease. But the summer that their children reach maturity (and start sleeping together), the fabric of the adult lives suddenly begins to unravel, and the secrets and revelations that are finally let loose—about themselves, and about the famous fourth band member who soared and fell without them—can never be reclaimed.
Straub packs wisdom and insight and humor together in a satisfying book about neighbors and nosiness, ambition and pleasure, the excitement of youth, the shock of middle age, and the fact that our passions—be they food, or friendship, or music—never go away, they just evolve and grow along with us.
The hardcover version of this book is currently selling on Amazon for $15.60, so you’re getting a much better deal with Book of the Month if you commit to a multi-month subscription and/or take advantage of the current coupon codes.
Through June 30th, new subscribers can save 30% on a 3-month subscription with coupon code “SUMMER30“ OR you can score a FREE “Summer Survival Kit” consisting of an exclusive Book of the Month beach bag & custom sunglasses, along with $5 off your 3-month subscription when you use coupon code “SSK5” at checkout.
