Let’s see what’s in the September 2020 “The Awkward Years” Crated With Love box!
The box itself was custom designed for the theme — “The Awkward Years” — and promised to be a date night that’s “all that and a bag of chips”! (It was shipped in a protective polymailer bag, not shown.)
A peek inside!
The date begins with you and your partner wishing to escape 2020 and going back to “simpler times”…
Clearly, your wish comes true as you find yourselves transported back to middle school — aka “The Awkward Years”. The info card above lists all the items you’ll find in the box, as well as a link to this month’s bonus content & Spotify playlist.
An information booklet let us know that we were headed back to middle school circa 1995 — which kinda made me feel old since I graduated high school in 1996. 🙁 Moving on… Each page took us through different parts of the day, from homeroom, to math class, study hall, and even after school activities.
Report cards were included for each partner to grade the other throughout the date. Two colorful gel pens were also provided.
Two “Back in the Day” composition booklets were included for your first activity. Each person was to fill out the booklet and give answers to questions based on what you would have said/chosen in 1995 and what your answers are today. You also had to write the answer you think your partner wrote for both then and now.
Once completed, you were to swap booklets and grade them based on how many answers were guessed correctly.
Pop quiz time!
For this activity, you were to divide the cards above into each of their 4 subjects (social studies, math, science, extra credit) and deal 5 cards of every subject to each person. You were then to mix up your own pile and place it face down in front of you. Each partner would then take turns choosing a card from their pile to ask the other person.
Every correct answer received a point, while every wrong answer required you (well, the person who got it wrong) to use the answer in a sentence that complements their partner. — Such a cute idea!
To help you plan your next movie night, Crated With Love designed a way to choose your movie using the power of MASH.
First, one partner was to ask the other for answers to fill in the category sections of the MASH board (movie genre, actor/actress, scenario, etc). Next, you were to close your eyes and start drawing a spiral in the circle indicated on the board until your partner says stop. Then you were to count the number of lines it takes to get to the center of the spiral, which would become your Magic Number. You then had to use the magic number to count and cross out items on your MASH board as explained on the instruction card. Once you only have one option left in each category, the winning combination would be the criteria used to pick your next date night movie.
Our after school activity had us attending a party thrown by the cool kids. — And what middle school party would be complete without a little spin the bottle?
To begin, we were to arrange all of the “7 Seconds in Heaven” cards into a circle and place the plastic bottle in the center. Each player was to take turns spinning the bottle and doing the action indicated on the card the bottle stops/points at. If you complete the challenge, you receive 1 point. If you choose not to do the challenge, you forfeit a point.
Once all of the activities were complete, you were to add up the scores on your report cards and celebrate your achievements with the “I love the 90’s” badge above. 🙂
Also included in the box were a couple quarter machine treasures, a slap bracelet, a Tamagotchi toy, and a holo sticker. Some of these were to be used with this month’s bonus activities (available on their site), and some were just for fun.
So to be completely honest, my husband and I haven’t actually experienced this Crated With Love date night yet (remote learning and house selling/buying are sucking up ALL of our time these days). However, we’re absolutely looking forward to doing all of the activities — as awkward as they may be — when we finally have a quiet night to ourselves. Crated With Love did an awesome job of creating a fun theme that pretty much any couple could relate to and feel comfortable opening up to their partner about. The activities were thoughtfully planned and all of the materials were provided right in the box. Can’t get much easier than that! 🙂 — Remember, for a limited time you can save $5 on your first box with coupon code “CRATEJOYLOVE“!
