I was super excited when I found out that January’s Loot Crate theme was “Rewind” — a look back at geek & gaming past! I grew up in the 80’s and I’m all about taking the occasional trip down memory lane.
If you’re new around these parts, Loot Crate is a monthly subscription box for fans of gamer/geek culture. Every month you’ll get a box packed with 6-8 items that can include toys, gear, snacks, hardware, art, accessories, and more! (They’ve even been sending limited edition Loot Crateexclusive items!) Boxes are $19.37/month (price includes shipping), or less with longer subscriptions.
Let’s see what’s in the box, dudes!
Okay, this is seriously the coolest Loot Crate box I’ve ever seen. It actually came in the standard black box, but when you turn it inside-out — BAM! — an old school Nintendo system! (The controller was a punch-out on the back of this month’s mini mag.) I can still remember begging my parents for this system back in 6th grade. I got it for Christmas and spent the rest of my school break playing the first Super Mario Bros game non-stop. I still actually have one of these systems (not my original one, as that died a long time ago) and I’m 99% sure that I’ve played it with every one of my ex-boyfriends. You can learn a lot from a man once you’ve challenged him to a game of “Blades of Steel”.
Here’s this month’s mini mag. It included articles on retro gaming, Voltron, and more.
Marvel Star Wars Comic Book Issue 001 (Exclusive) – I believe this was the first spoiler released for January. It’s a Loot Crate exclusive Star Wars comic with a variant Han-Solo and Chewbacca cover (you can see the Loot Crate logos on the… space stuff). I was going to keep this sealed, but my husband wants to read it. Psssh.
8-Bit Sunglasses – Another Loot Crate exclusive. I always thought these kind of glasses were neat, though I’m not too sure I’d actually wear them in public. Definitely a fun, quirky novelty item though!
Voltron Blueprint T-Shirt – Yep, another Loot Crate exclusive! My husband was with me when I opened the box and said he’ll definitely be rocking this shirt. I don’t know a thing about Voltron, but he’s a fan so this shirt’s a hit. I did just notice that the printing is a little off-center, though I don’t think it’ll stop him from wearing it.
10-Doh! Figure from Squid Kids Ink – How cute is this little cartridge dude?! He’s about 3 inches tall and inspired by NES console games from the 80’s. He even comes with his own NES gun. The only thing that I wasn’t a fan of was trying to assemble his arms & feet… I don’t know if I’m not pushing hard enough or what, but they don’t seem to anchor into the holes very well.
Retro Arcade Skinny Tie from Black Tie Geek – If you have to dress up, might as well do it in (geek) style, right? Geek chic? This is a super cool black skinny tie featuring an allover Asteroids Space Invaders print. The mini mag notes that us girl types can use it as a head scarf/tie/thing. Gnarly, dude.
Comic Notebook from Unemployed Philosopher’s Guild – This is a nifty little notebook that features blank comic book panels on each page so you can create your very own comic book. There’s even a sheet of dialogue bubble stencils, though if you can draw comic book characters I’m thinking you’d have no trouble drawing the bubbles. Still, pretty cool.
Wow! What a seriously fun Loot Crate! I love the theme and they did a good job sticking to it. As always, I didn’t do a cost breakdown, since it’s nearly impossible to determine the prices being that there’s so many exclusive items — but you better believe you’re getting more than yo’ money’s worth. The t-shirt alone is probably worth the cost of the entire box.

I never got the tie… 🙁

wait a sec, found out the puzzle XD

Did you find the tie??
Josh
So this is my first lootcrate and you consider this a great box month? The shirt is cool but it’s a bumming shirt. The glasses are garbage and cheap, the toy is cute…. I guess, comic book yourself eh, a tie, and the Star Wars comic. No game. If this is a great box then I’ll be canceling my subscription.
Rankings:
1. voltron shirt
2. Tie
3. Comic
4. Toy
5. Make your own comic

For under $20, heck yeah, I think it’s a great box. Hell, the t-shirt alone is probably worth the cost of the entire thing. Feel free to check my other Loot Crate reviews to compare, but I think you’ll see a common theme. My husband thinks subscription boxes are kinda silly, but he totally approves of Loot Crate. But hey, you like what you like.

That’s not space invaders? *cough* Loved our box!

Yeah, I realized my slip-up (ignorance?) after I posted. That’s what I get for asking my husband if it was Asteroids. Pfft.

Oh MAN this was my first loot crate and i had previously been subscribed to nerd block..i find both super sweet and honestly as you said for the cost per month the shirt alone is generaly that full cost so anything extra really is the sweet bit. and BAM i was totally blown away with this first box. Dunno what Josh is complaining about (dunno maybe he’s had no other crate subscriptions) but this by far exceeded my expectations even if half the stuff isn’t my type..the glasses and nes figure alone do it for me 😛 plus now my father gets a super cool space invaders tie for fathers day/his birthday 😛 I signed up for a 6 month period so i can see how it goes before committing further but as with all crates some are great some get a bit blah, so i think loot crate so far in my opinion from what i’ve seen in reviews and with my own first crate is def worth the extra cost and shipping to my country 😀

I knew I wasn’t crazy! Hell, I’m not even all that into geek stuff like this, but I still think it’s a fun box. Plus, the value is beyond awesome. 🙂
