Our Little Roots is a subscription box that sends you (or your child) a monthly delivery of everything you need to begin growing, or continue growing, a garden.
Each box will contain a packet of non-GMO seeds, organic soil, stakes, and a biodegradable planting bag. When you sign up, you’ll get to select the type of seed you want: Fruit, Vegetable, Herb, or Flower. Our Little Roots will then select seeds based on the season of the year and where each would thrive in certain climates. If you live up north where it’s colder, they’ll tailor your selection to seeds that can better withstand harsh conditions.
Subscriptions are $11.95/month, or as low as $7.50/month with an annual plan. (Right now you can save 25% off your first box with coupon code “FIRSTROOT“!)
Let’s see what’s in the September 2015 Our Little Roots box!
Everything was shipped in a small brown box with an Our Little Roots logo on top.
A peek inside. — Grow something beautiful!
Basil Cinnamon Seeds (Non-GMO) – I’ve never heard of basil cinnamon, so I had to do a little research. According to Wikipedia, it’s an easy to grow herb that has a “spicy, fragrant aroma and flavor”. It can be used in teas and baked goods such as cookies and pies. It’s also used in pastas, salads, jellies, and vinegars. Outside of the kitchen, cinnamon basil is used in dried arrangements and as a potpourri. While it wasn’t hard to track it down, It would have been nice if this info was included in the box as well. Especially since it’s geared towards kids.
Organic Soil – A resealable bag of organic soil was included to plant the seeds in. Our Little Roots includes the highest quality organic soil so you can trust what your new seeds will be growing in.
Biodegradable Grow Bag & Stakes – You can plant your seeds indoors using this cute biodegradable bag. When it’s time to transfer the plants outdoors, the whole bag can safely be put in the ground. Stakes are also included to mark the growing plants.
Our Little Roots is a nice alternative to traditional kid’s subscription boxes that mainly send toys and crafts. It’s never too early to learn about nature and growing your own food. I also like that they take a very eco-friendly approach to it. However, I would feel much better planting the seeds in a biodegradable pot instead of a bag, because… well, kids. A planter is (a little?) less likely to be tipped over by wild toddlers.
