Treats is a newer subscription box that sends you a selection of snacks from all over the globe.
Each box will focus on a different continent and highlight two to three countries within it, sending snacks from those particular regions. One month they may send an Asian-inspired box and include treats from Thailand, Japan, and Taiwan. The next month will be somewhere completely different. Every box will include at least eight items in their original packaging and can range from candy, to chips, to cookies, and anything in between.
Subscriptions start at $12.95/month with free shipping to the US. (You can save 15% on your first month with coupon code “CRATEJOY”.)
Let’s see what’s in the August 2015 Treats box!
The box was wrapped in brown kraft paper and I had no clue what was inside.
The unwrapped box made things a little more clear. 😉
The info card listed all of the products including a small photo of each one. (There wasn’t a theme listed which was kinda odd, but it’s pretty clear that the featured continent is Asia.)
Kasugai Fruit Gummy Assortment – Gluten-free gummies that feature 3 different flavors: lychee, mango, and strawberry. Unfortunately for me, they contain gelatin, so I won’t be able to sample them. Boo. They do sound good though!
Uegaki Kaki No Tane – These are baked rice crackers made with rice, soy sauce, and spices. There’s a ton of ’em in this bag and it looks like the whole thing is one serving.
Meiji Watapachi Melon Soda – It’s hard to tell exactly what this is, but it feels like a powder (and they do show a cup on the package), so I guess you mix this with something to create a drink? Definitely something kids would be into.
Glico Giant Caplico Strawberry – This looks super cute and if my girls didn’t already have a zillion donuts today, I would have opened it up for photos of the actual product. It appears to be a wafer cookie cone filled with some kind of strawberry flavored candy. Yum!
Calbee Baked Shrimp Chips – Yeeeeah… no. I’ve heard of these but have never actually had them in my possession. Even before being vegan (or even vegetarian) I was always kinda weirded out by seafood, so seeing shrimp flavored snacks just doesn’t appeal to me at all. But hey, different strokes for different folks, right? 😉
Morinaga Milk Caramel – I’ve actually gotten a box of these not too long ago from Try the World. At the time I was surprised to see Japanese caramels, but I guess they’re a popular treat there as well.
Uha Cola Puccho – These feel soft and contain gelatin, so I’d say they’re chewy Starburst-like candies. Cola-flavored ones!
Calbee Jagabee Butter Soy Sauce Crisps – I was excited when I first saw that the package featured potatoes, thinking this would be a vegan potato chip snack. Sadly, it not only contains dairy, but also rendered beef fat and tuna extract. Why you gotta be all anti-vegan, Japan?
Amanoya Himemaru – This is a large bag of Japanese rice cracker… clusters. I was almost going to try them until I Googled “bonito”. Ah well.
Glico Strawberry Pocky – Yay! While I personally can’t eat most of the items in Japanese snack boxes, my girls have found a favorite new snack thanks to them — Pocky! I think they’ve tried the cookies n’ cream, pizza, and now strawberry flavored ones. Big fans. 🙂
While this month’s featured region wasn’t exactly vegan-friendly, I was still impressed with the overall curation and selection Treats box provided. — A great subscription for anyone looking to expand their snacking horizons. 😉 Oh — and you can save 15% on your first box with coupon code “CRATEJOY“!
