A peek inside!
An info card listed all of the item’s in April’s box, along with brief descriptions and dates/instructions for their monthly Instagram photo contest.
Sky Without Stars (System Divine Book 1) by Jessica Brody & Joanne Rendell
April’s featured book was hand wrapped in yellow tissue paper and tied with a pink ribbon. Tucked inside was a letter from the authors, as well as a signed bookplate. The letter mentioned the two different “secret covers” under the jacket. You could receive the Regime (crown) version or Refuge (lock). — I got Refuge!
From Amazon:
In the tradition of The Lunar Chronicles, this sweeping reimagining of Les Misérables tells the story of three teens from very different backgrounds who are thrown together amidst the looming threat of revolution on the French planet of Laterre.
A thief.
An officer.
A guardian.Three strangers, one shared destiny…
When the Last Days came, the planet of Laterre promised hope. A new life for a wealthy French family and their descendants. But five hundred years later, it’s now a place where an extravagant elite class reigns supreme; where the clouds hide the stars and the poor starve in the streets; where a rebel group, long thought dead, is resurfacing.
Whispers of revolution have begun—a revolution that hinges on three unlikely heroes…
Chatine is a street-savvy thief who will do anything to escape the brutal Regime, including spy on Marcellus, the grandson of the most powerful man on the planet.
Marcellus is an officer—and the son of a renowned traitor. In training to take command of the military, Marcellus begins to doubt the government he’s vowed to serve when his father dies and leaves behind a cryptic message that only one person can read: a girl named Alouette.
Alouette is living in an underground refuge, where she guards and protects the last surviving library on the planet. But a shocking murder will bring Alouette to the surface for the first time in twelve years…and plunge Laterre into chaos.
All three have a role to play in a dangerous game of revolution—and together they will shape the future of a planet.Age Range: Teen
Power, romance, and destiny collide in this sweeping reimagining of Victor Hugo’s masterpiece, Les Misérables.
Also included was a letter from Melanie & Sarah of Unplugged Book Box — that you were instructed to read AFTER finishing the book. It revealed their shared goal of reading longer books, their favorite parts of this book, and an invitation to join their exclusive Facebook group.
Six of Crows Compact
An Unplugged Book Box exclusive item, this mirrored compact is printed with the quote: “It was a smile he might die to earn again” — Leigh Bardugo. The line comes from Bardugo’s fantasy novel, “Six of Crows“. The compact is plastic and measures roughly 2 inches in diameter.
The Soap Librarian Anna’s Safety Shower Gel
Another exclusively designed item, this shower gel was inspired by the book “The Sea Witch“ by Sarah Henning. The pretty pink gel is scented with red hibiscus & açaí and can be used as either a body wash or bubble bath. I was excited to try it until I saw that it contains parabens, which was kind of disappointing (and surprising).
Pirates of the Caribbean Bag
This sturdy drawstring bag/backpack is printed with the quote “Not all treasure is silver & gold” from Pirates of the Caribbean. The bag is black with white printing and dark blue accents. It has a large pocket in the front, as well as two slimmer pockets inside for pencils/pens.
Fiction Bath Co. Aquaman Body Lotion
Yet another Unplugged Book Box exclusive, this body lotion from Fiction Bath Co. does NOT contain any phthalates, parabens, or colorants, making it easier on sensitive skin. It features a blend of shea butter, cocoa butter, aloe vera & vitamin E, and has a pleasant driftwood/citrus/sea moss scent.
Bookmark & Magnet
The final items were an exclusive Dante & Aristotle bookmark (from “Aristotle and Donte Discover the Secrets of the Universe“ by Benjamin Alire Sáenz) and a magnet featuring an inspiring quote by Steve Jobs.
Also included were a “Wash Away Your Worries” Spotify playlist and a recipe for Lara Jean’s Snickerdoodles.
April’s Unplugged Book Box (Young Adult version) was packed with fun & useful items — each with its own specific book-inspired theme. Though not something I’d choose to read myself, the featured book has very positive reviews on Amazon. I also thought it was cool that it came with a signed bookplate and letter from the authors. 🙂 — Remember, if you’re interested in subscribing you can save 10% on your first month with coupon code “GETUNPLUGGED“!
