Every month Birchbox features a guest-curated box that you can choose instead of your “regular” box. August’s curator was Nicole Richie, so I decided to check it out.
If you’re new to Birchbox, it’s basically a monthly subscription box that sends you 4-5 grooming, beauty, and lifestyle samples for just $10/month. When you sign up you take a style quiz and they send you products that best fit your profile. Both well-known and up-and-coming brands are included, all in generously sized multi-use samples.
Their rewards program is easily one of the best around. You earn points for reviewing your samples, referring friends, and purchasing full sized products. Each review is worth 10 points and referrals are 50 points. Every 100 points gives you $10 to spend in their shop. The points rack up fast and there’s no limit to how many you can earn. The shop is full of great products including candles, cosmetics, home accessories, tea, chocolate, and lots more goodies. Since each box contains at least 5 samples, you’ll already be racking up 50 points after you review them. So it’s sort of like paying $5 per box instead of $10, since you get that $5 in store credit. Nice!
Let the August “Candidly Nicole” Birchbox unboxing begin!
The box itself was really pretty. — I love the colorful floral design!
As always, the info card listed each item inside the box, as well as a brief description and retail prices for the full-sized versions.
LAQA & Co. Cheeky Lip Crayon in “Humble Brag” (~$6) – This smooth, dual-use crayon can be used to tint lips, as well as cheeks. I don’t really wear color on my lips, and I have a zillion blushes I need to use up, so I’ll be passing this along to someone who can get some use out of it.
Rene Furterer LISSEA Leave-In Smoothing Fluid (~$4) – A lightweight, leave-in smoothing fluid that protects your hair against heat damage and humidity. It contains avocado oil for natural hydration, as well as a blend of plant extracts that provides a pleasant, natural scent.
St. Tropez Gradual In-Shower Tanning Lotion (~$6) – This is a self-tanning lotion that you apply right in the shower. After cleansing, turn off the shower (um, no) and apply the lotion. Wait 3 minutes, then rinse. While the concept is kinda cool, there’s no way I’m turning off the water mid-shower. Getting the right temperature before stepping in is fine, but doing it again mid-way through? Nope. Not happening. (Yep, I’m that lazy.)
Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion Skin Exfoliant (~$9.50) – I’ve gotten a ton of Dr. Brandt samples in various subscription boxes, and I think I’ve yet to try a single one. No real reason, just over-loaded with products I spose. Anywhooo… This is a gentle skin exfoliant that can be used 1-2 times a week for a glowing complexion.
OPI Venice Collection Polish in “Worth a Pretty Penne” (~$2) – I love getting nail polish in boxes and it’s the main reason why I chose this curated box. However, I’m really not a fan of this color. It’s a little too gold-y for my taste. Ah well.
Although I was well aware of the contents in my “Candidly Nicole” Birchbox before I received it, I felt kinda “meh” about it once it came. I think I was just hoping for a different shade of polish. Honestly, none of the products initially wowed me when I chose the box, but I was hoping I’d learn to love ’em once they arrived. Wishful thinking. It wasn’t a bad box by any means, just not for me. Oh, and as usual the value was good — around $27 in products for just $10.
If you’d like to sign up for Birchbox, new customers can get 100 points when you sign up with this link and use coupon code “BBJETBLUE10“– 100 points is equal to $10.00 to spend in their shop. Since the box itself is $10/month, it’s like getting your first one for FREE!
