Foodstirs is a fun “food crafting” kit designed for kids ages 5 through 12. Each kit contain recipes, dry ingredients, cooking & craft tools, food fact cards, and more.
You can choose to purchase individual themed kits, or opt for a 3- or 6-month “series”: The Culinarian (3-month series, $29.99/mo.) sends your little one a new kit every month with new recipes to explore and more skills to learn. It also includes an original Foodstirs bandana! The Sous Chef (6-month series, $27.99/mo.) includes a new kit every month for 6 months, as well as a bandana and certificate of completion with the last kit.
Foodstirs kindly sent me the first box in The Culinarian series for review. Let’s see what was inside!
First look. The box was packed to the brim with food-y goodness.
A little welcome card with a friendly reminder for your kiddos about washing their hands before handling food and always having adult supervision in the kitchen.
The recipe! This kit featured “Gooey Brownie Cupcakes”! The card listed everything you’d find in the box, as well as the ingredients that you’d have to provide (the “wet” ingredients) and tools needed to make it happen.
All of the dry ingredients were tucked inside this cute drawstring bag featuring the Foodstirs logo.
The included ingredients were flour, cocoa powder, brown sugar, granulated sugar, powdered sugar, and salt. You needed to provide your own butter, eggs, and vanilla.
Also included were colorful cupcake liners and a handy Kidstirs spatula.
All of the directions were detailed on the back of the recipe card, complete with photos for each step. My girls are still too young to be of much help in the kitchen, so I was on my own. And maaan did I screw up. Being vegan, I naturally decided to “veganize” the recipe by using Egg Replacer in place of the eggs and Earth Balance for the butter. I’m not quite sure where I screwed up, but my poor brownies turned into chocolate-flavored… rocks. (Oh, um, I may have mixed all the ingredients in one bowl instead of two to save time… Yeah, bad move. Clearly I could have used a kid or two to assist me with this.)
My brownies chocolate rocks. 🙁 *If you follow the directions like you’re supposed to, I’m sure you’ll have better results than I did.* See, even adults can learn from these kits! 😉
While your brownies were baking there was a little craft project to keep the kiddos busy: Cut out the stencils in the photo above to use on your finished product. A stencil gets placed on top of the brownie and you sprinkle powdered sugar around it to make a fun design. Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to use mine. (Wahhh)
There was also a card that explained the importance of mixing and measuring. Obviously I failed to take this into consideration while making my chocolate rocks. Whoops.
Finally, there’s a checklist for your child to record the skills they learned and a section for notes. Oh, there was also a separate recipe included for “Turkey Meatloaf Cupcakes”. I’m not quite sure if those could be veganized. 😉
Even though I totally goofed up the recipe, I thought Foodstirs was a fun box. I liked that it included all of the dry ingredients that you may not always have on hand (cocoa, powdered sugar) and that there was more than enough for the recipe. (I actually poured the “extras” into my own sugar/flour containers since there was so much left over.)
