The Humble Bugs Character Building Kit is a bi-monthly subscription box that helps families educate their children on the importance of character.
Each box will include supplies, information, a classic movie, crafts, and more that the whole family can enjoy together. Boxes are themed around a different character trait each month — such as honesty, respect, empathy, and goal setting. The crafts and activities can be done by just the kids, as well as the entire family (there will be enough materials for 3 people to enjoy). Boxes are designed for kids ages 6-11, but include activities and object lessons that can be adapted for kids as young as 3 up through their teenaged years.
Subscriptions are $35/month, or less with multi-month commitments.
Let’s see what’s in the September 2016 Humble Bugs Character Building Kit!
Everything was shipped in a black & brown box with what I’m guessing is a “humble bug” on top. 😉
A peek inside.
September’s box theme was “Setting Goals” (featuring Olympians). A helpful guide indicated which activities that parents were in charge of and which ones were for the kids. There was also a flow chart that gave you an idea of how to plan out the activities.
All of the crafts were individually wrapped with all the necessary materials and instructions inside.
Olympic Medals Craft – First on the agenda was making Olympic medals using foam circles, ribbon, glitter glue, and tiny self-adhesive shapes for decoration. These were to be given out at the Family Olympics event to be held later on.
Reaching Goals Booklet for Parents – This booklet was to serve as a guide for the parents as their family worked their way through the activities in the box. There were explanations of what goals are and how to reach them, object lessons, a life journal, and writing activities such as the one below.
Suitcase Writing Activity – To help children better understand goals, this craft involved writing down their goals on the sheets provided and glueing them to the folded paper bag. Additional colored paper shapes were included to decorate the paper bag “suitcase” that was to represent carrying your goals wherever you go. (The cotton balls were for another craft, but I didn’t realize it when I took this photo. Whoops!)
Dream Catcher Craft – According to the instructions, dreams are a catalyst to reaching our goals. This activity included enough materials to make 3 colorful dream catchers. Provided were 3 hoops, assorted beads, 3 spools of yarn, feathers, 3 kid-safe sewing needles, straw pieces, extra yarn for tassels, and step-by-step instructions.
Reaching Goals Booklet for Kids – A kid’s version of the parent’s “Reaching Goals” booklet, this featured information about the Olympics, how to create your own “Family Olympics”, and various games to compete in.
Family Olympics Materials – A variety of supplies were included for hosting your own backyard “Family Olympics”. There were 3 personalizable tickets, a score card, plastic coins (for “shot-put” aka coin toss), and spoons & cotton balls (for LaCotton Ball Cross).
Jumping for Joy Movie – A clean, classic family movie was provided that’s based on the story of a young girl in the 50’s who loves basketball. Unfortunately, she’s told that girls can’t play “boy’s” basketball, but she doesn’t let that stop her. A great movie for showing kids how important it is not to give up on their dreams/goals.
Reaching Goals Pin & Certificate – Each Humble Bugs box will come with 3 Certificates of Completion and corresponding pins for parents to present to their children once all the activities have been successfully completed.
You’ve Got Character Pins – Also included in every box are “You’ve Got Character” pins that kids can award to others whom they see showing positive character traits.
Humble Bugs Character Building Kits are a great way to teach children about character while enjoying crafts and activities as a family. Though there was plenty of information, I did find myself a little confused as to which activities are to be done when. That said, I’m sure it doesn’t matter too much when each one is completed as long as you have fun doing them. Overall, a nice subscription box to encourage positive behavior and increased family time.
