Let’s see what’s in my January 2019 Veestro box!
Everything was shipped (via FedEx) in a square box with the Veestro logo on the sides.
All of the items were tucked inside of an insulated bag and surrounded by packages of dry ice. (The photo above was taken after the meals were removed. As you can see, the dry ice is still completely in tact.)
Also enclosed in the box were a packing slip, thank you note, and welcome booklet.
The welcome booklet included tips for storing/serving your meals, as well as nutritional info for every entree (and side item) that they currently offer.
For this review I was sent 6 of Veestro’s most popular meals, along with a bottle of their 100% cold-pressed juice. All of the meals are packaged in either 100% compostable trays with cardboard sleeves or recyclable BPA-free plastic pouches.
Veestro Red Curry
First up, red curry with tofu! (Full disclosure: I was originally going to include photos of the cooked/plated meals, but quickly realized that food photographer I am not. 😉 ) As a lover of red curry (it’s my go-to pick whenever we go out for Thai), I was excited to see this included in the box. The meal includes a delicious red coconut curry sauce simmered with tofu, broccoli, carrots, and more — with brown rice on the side. Most (all?) of the entrees give you the option of heating them in the microwave or a standard oven. I went with microwave for this dish and it turned out perfect.
Veestro Chick’n Quesadilla
This big ol’ quesadilla was generously stuffed with a blend of plant-based “chick’n”, vegan cheese, zucchini, and other veggies. It also came with its own black bean based sauce to drizzle on top or use as a dip. This was the first meal I tried and it was how I learned that for the best results, you’re supposed to defrost the meals prior to heating them. (Oops!) It wasn’t a big deal, as it just required a few extra minutes in the oven to fully cook the center. Taste-wise, this one was “just okay”. I loved the chick’n pieces, but the cheese was a little too runny and reminded me more of egg yolk than gooey cheese.
Veestro Country Fried Chick’n
Okay, now this is absolutely the sort of meal I could eat every single day and not get tired of it… Two pieces of country fried vegan “chicken”, flavorful gravy, two scoops of mashed potatoes, and mixed veggies. What’s not to love?? SO good. 🙂
Veestro Pasta Bolognese
I had never actually tried any sort of pasta bolognese before (vegan or otherwise), so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this dish. From what I gathered (Googled), traditional bolognese originated in Bologna, Italy and is made with ground beef. This vegan version substitutes Chinese eggplant, mushrooms, carrots, and other veggies for the meat. Honestly, it wasn’t really my cup o’ tea, but it was fun to try!
Veestro Veggie Empanadas
Ooh! I love veggie empanadas, but rarely indulge in them so this was a nice treat. The trio above are made with a nice, flaky dough and are filled with peas, potatoes, carrots, and more. They also came with a packet of chimichurri sauce, which I decided against because I prefer my empanadas just as they are (sauce-less). 🙂
Veestro Enchilada Casserole
Okay, so after not really enjoying the cheese in the enchilada mentioned earlier in the post, I’ve been a little hesitant to try out this enchilada casserole. Like the regular enchilada, it’s made with seasoned tofu & veggies, but with a corn-based (gluten free!) tortilla instead of wheat. It also comes with its own red sauce to pour over it for extra flavor.
Veestro Hand Greenade Cold-Pressed Juice
Last, but not least, a bottle of 100% cold-pressed juice! “Hand Greenade” is a preservative-free blend of celery, pineapple, cucumber, green apple, spinach, and kale. It contains no added water or sugar and contains just 50 calories per serving (2 servings per bottle).
As a long-time vegan, I was super excited to get to try Veestro‘s plant-based meal service. I was immediately impressed from the moment the box arrived at my door and I found that the contents were still 100% frozen (that dry ice really works!). I also appreciate the ease of which the meals can be heated — in the microwave or standard oven — and that everything was already prepared & ready to enjoy. A couple of the meals weren’t really options I would have chosen myself, but the ones I liked I REALLY liked and would gladly eat again. Overall, I’d my first Veestro experience was a success! 🙂 — Remember, for a limited time (thru 1/30), you can save $30 on each of your first 4 deliveries of the 5-Day and 7-Day Weight Loss Plans with coupon code WEIGHTLOSS!
