Yay! Our much-anticipated My Pretend Place Dress Up Box for July is finally here!
If you’re not aware, the My Pretend Place Dress Up Box is a quarterly dress-up and “make believe” subscription for both boys and girls. It consists of a selection of items designed to encourage imagination and pretend play geared towards kids aged 3 through 6.
Each My Pretend Place Dress Up Box will feature a different theme and include things such as costumes, books, crafts, activities, and even food items. You have the option to choose from a girl, boy, or gender neutral box — all of which will include a costume and other fun goodies fitting the theme.
Subscriptions are $50 (shipping included) and sent are on a quarterly basis. During the “in-between” months, you’ll receive 2 additional packages with supplemental ideas, activities, and crafts to stretch the fun into the whole year.
My Pretend Place also offers a separate monthly DIY Projects subscription for just $15/month. You can see my reviews for that box here.
Okay, let’s see what’s inside the July 2015 My Pretend Place Dress Up Box!
I was so excited to tear into the box that I completely forgot to take a photo of it. Whoops! Here’s a peek at what I saw upon opening it though.
The box includes a letter to your child from “Princess Shaylee”, princess of the field fairies. The theme for this quarter’s girl’s box was — not surprisingly — fairies! (The boy boxes got a firefighter theme, while gender neutral received veterinarian.)
Melissa & Doug Fairy Role Play Set ($22.46) – My girls LOVE dressing up and were thrilled to see this adorable fairy role play set in the box. It includes a sparkly fairy dress with a “petal” skirt, shimmering wings, and a glittery wand. They’ve had many fights over the princess dress from the first My Pretend Place box we received, so I’m glad we have two frilly dresses now. (Not that it’ll stop ’em from fighting regardless, but still…)
I probably should have changed/took off their clash-y t-shirts, but ah well. Still cute!
The princess and the fairy. And mom’s sandals. 😉
“Alice the Fairy” by David Shannon ($11.98) – I love the colorful, whimsical illustrations in this book and the fact that there’s not a ton of text (sometimes less is more). The fairy’s big maniacal grin is a wee bit unsettling (perhaps an ax would be more fitting than a wand?!), but other than that it’s a cute book. 😉
Fairy House Project – With this straight-forward project, your kiddo can make their own little colorful fairy house. Included was a wooden house, 12 paint colors, a brush, and some felt stickers.
The project took a lot longer than I anticipated and I probably should have dug out a larger brush for easier (faster) coverage. I also forgot to have them add the stickers until after I took the “completed” photo. Ah well. They still had fun with it.
The finished fairy house. I think they painted the perch at least 3 different times/colors. I’m not sure that this would attract your “typical fairy”, but perhaps a wayward fairy who likes to experiment with psychotropic drugs?
Melissa & Doug Blendy Pens ($4.99) – This looks fun, but it’s for kids 5 and up, so we’ll save it for later. There’s 20 pages of fairy and princess themed pages, along with 4 pens and 2 “fusion chambers” that create 6 different color combinations.
Also included in every box are a My Pretend Place magnet, as well as foam stickers to decorate the shipping box for use as a storage/dress-up trunk.
I absolutely LOVED the theme for this quarter’s My Pretend Place Dress Up Box! My girls both adore the fairy role play set (one of them is actually wearing it as I type this) and the house project and books were perfect complements to the costume.
I’m not sure of the total value, since the fairy house project doesn’t have a retail price, but the other 3 items total about $40 (using Amazon prices). So, when you add the house, plus the shipping costs, it pretty much breaks even with the monthly subscription price. However, besides this first box, you also receive additional shipments for month 2 and 3 with supplemental materials — yours FREE with each quarterly subscription box. So the value is definitely there when you consider everything you receive over the 3 months. — Also if you use the coupon code below, it’s only $35 for your first month!
If you’d like to sign up for the My Pretend Place Dress Up box, they’re offering new customers 30% off their first box! Just use coupon code “pretend” at checkout. This also works on their Pretend Play Projects Box!
