Let’s see what’s in the June 2019 Young Adult Unplugged Book Box!
Everything was shipped in a black box with the Unplugged Book Box logo on top.
A peek inside!
An info card listed all of the item’s in June’s “Summer Solstice” box, along with brief descriptions and dates/instructions for their monthly Instagram photo contest.
June’s featured book was hand wrapped in blue tissue paper and tied with a gray/black ribbon. Tucked inside was a note from the author, as well as a signed bookplate.
It’s 1989 in New York City, and for three teens, the world is changing.
Reza is an Iranian boy who has just moved to the city with his mother to live with his stepfather and stepbrother. He’s terrified that someone will guess the truth he can barely acknowledge about himself. Reza knows he’s gay, but all he knows of gay life are the media’s images of men dying of AIDS.
Judy is an aspiring fashion designer who worships her uncle Stephen, a gay man with AIDS who devotes his time to activism as a member of ACT UP. Judy has never imagined finding romance…until she falls for Reza and they start dating.
Art is Judy’s best friend, their school’s only out and proud teen. He’ll never be who his conservative parents want him to be, so he rebels by documenting the AIDS crisis through his photographs.
As Reza and Art grow closer, Reza struggles to find a way out of his deception that won’t break Judy’s heart—and destroy the most meaningful friendship he’s ever known.
Inspired by the character Baz Grimm-Pitch of Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, this Unplugged Book Box exclusive handcrafted sugar scrub is perfect for getting your skin summer-ready. It’s made with a blend of pure cane sugar, almond and coconut oil, Vitamin E oil, and hand blended essential oils. The formula is both vegan-friendly and cruelty-free. 🙂
This handmade pouch is crafted from sturdy canvas and has a waterproof polyester lining. It’s solid black in color with the phrase “Shine Bright” printed in shimmery silver. Measuring roughly 6 inches by 4 inches in size, it’s ideal for holding your cell phone, coins, lip balm, and more.
Inspired by Ronan from The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater, this caffeine-free tea was made exclusively for Unplugged Book Box. It features a flavorful blend of ingredients including green rooibos tea, natural blueberry flavor, raspberry leaves, rose hips, hibiscus, cranberries, blue cornflowers, and natural vanilla flavor. It’s gluten-free and contains no nuts, dairy, or sugar.
I love a good shower steamer! You can’t tell from the photos above, but this one is heart-shaped and rather small — just about an inch in diameter. It’s scented with real essential oils of eucalyptus & peppermint, and smells fantastic.
According to the info card, enamel pins have been highly requested by subscribers. — So June’s box included their very first collectible enamel pin designed in-house by Team Unplugged. Inspired by Sailor Scouts Neptune & Uranus from Sailor Moon, the pin is solid black with both astrological signs in the center, surrounded by white & yellow stars.
Also included were a “Create Your Own Sunshine” Spotify playlist and a recipe for “Simon & Blue’s Oreo Smoothie”.
Unplugged Book Box does such an awesome job sourcing newly released titles. — This month’s book was just released on June 4th! I also love how they partner mainly with small businesses and artists for all of their book-inspired goodies. The addition of their new collectible pins was a fun surprise as well. 😀 — Remember, if you’re interested in subscribing you can save 10% on your first month with coupon code “GETUNPLUGGED“!
