I reviewed our first My Pretend Place Dress Up Box back in February and was really impressed with what was inside (you can check it out here). My girls are at the age where they’re taking more interest in pretend play, so I was excited to see what would be in store for April’s box.
My Pretend Place Dress Up Box is a quarterly dress-up and “make believe” subscription for both boys and girls. It consists of a selection of items designed to encourage imagination and pretend play geared towards kids aged 3 through 6.
Each My Pretend Place Dress Up box will feature a different theme and include things such as costumes, books, crafts, activities, and even food items. You have the option to choose from a girl, boy, or gender neutral box — all of which will include a costume and other fun goodies fitting the theme.
Subscriptions are $50 (shipping included) and sent are on a quarterly basis. During the “in-between” months, you’ll receive 2 additional packages with supplemental ideas, activities, and crafts to stretch the fun into the whole year.
My Pretend Place also offers a separate monthly DIY Projects subscription for just $15/month. You can see my reviews for that box here.
Let’s see what’s inside April’s My Pretend Place Dress Up Box!
Everything was shipped in a big white box with the My Pretend Place logo in the corner.
The box includes a letter to your child which introduces the theme for this quarter — “Superheroes”! Both boys and girls will receive this theme, however there will be a few different versions sent out (different color combos, etc). Gender neutral subscriptions will receive a “Pirate” box that’s appropriate for both genders (only one version will be sent).
Little Adventures Lightning Bolt Tutu – My girls are both crazy obsessed with tutus these days and have pretty much destroyed the ones they have (It doesn’t help that they’re cheap and the girls snag them on their sneakers when they try to put them on.) This tutu from Little Adventures is a LOT more sturdy and well-made than the ones they have now, so I was happy to see it included in the box. Plus, it’s totally adorable.
Simply by Design Power Shield – Every superhero needs a shield! This is a big foam disc with elastic handles attached to the back for easy carrying. I wasn’t sure if my kiddos would be into it, but they totally were. Well, one of them at least…
Aw… there’s my little superhero! (Her sidekick clearly wasn’t into into saving the world today.)
Someone’s not 100% convinced of her sister’s newfound superhero status.
Little Adventures Lightning Bolt Cape – We actually received this same cape in a Citrus Lane box a while back, but with twins it never hurts to have doubles! It’s bright pink and features a purple and gold lightning bolt emblem on the back, while a velcro closure fastens it in the front.
“Dex – The Heart of a Hero” Book – In going along with the superhero theme, this book features a little dog named Dex who, despite being bullied by a tomcat, is determined to be a hero. The illustrations are great and I thought it was neat how they included comic book style captions throughout the book. Cute!
Superhero Cuffs Craft – April’s craft/activity was to assemble your own superhero cuffs. Included were foam strips, star shapes, and velcro pieces. My Pretend Place always includes a craft project that can be used and played with over and over again, as opposed to a simple decoration that sits on a shelf.
Also included in the box was a My Pretend Place magnet, as well as foam stickers to decorate the shipping box for use as a storage/dress-up trunk.
I’ll admit I wasn’t too excited when I first heard about the superhero theme for April, but it ended up being a really cute box! The tutu is an absolute hit with my girls, I’m happy to get a second cape, the shield is neat, and I’m never unhappy to get more books. Oh, and the craft is cute too! Clearly, I’m pretty pleased with this box. 🙂
I didn’t do a cost breakdown, since I couldn’t find the price for the shield, but the cape and tutu both go for around $20 each on Amazon, so I’d say the value is definitely there. Plus, besides this first box, you also receive additional shipments for month 2 and 3 with supplemental materials — included and shipped for FREE with each quarterly subscription box.
If you’d like to subscribe to the My Pretend Place Dress Up box, for a limited time they’re offering 20% off your first box when you use coupon code “playtime” at checkout! This also works on their monthly DIY Pretend Play Projects box.
